Skyridge Slays The Giant, Wins First Championship

The UHSAA 6A title game started the way everyone not in black and orange thought it would. Corner Canyon drew a flag early and converted with Ren Neilsen creeping the crease and getting a goal. On the ensuing faceoff, the ball was flipped in the air and Cole Bonham picked it out of the air and took it to the house and scored. The defense of the Chargers was stout and Skyridge was looking to find a groove on the offensive end. Corner Canyon scored again midway through the quarter when Kampton Dutton scooped up a loose ball, made a move, lost the defender and scored. With under a minute to go in the quarter, Tommi Johnson picked off a clearing pass at the midfield and had a 1-on-1 opportunity with Chargers goalie Jack Rasmussen who had hustled back to the cage. Johnson shot but hit the crossbar. The Chargers took a 3-0 goal lead into the second quarter.

Pierson DeGracie scored next for the Chargers to extend the lead. On the ensuing faceoff, Evan Wentworth won the faceoff and took it the distance and almost made it a five goal game for Corner Canyon, but Luke Adams made the save for Skyridge. Adams began to clear and the Chargers jumped into a 10-man ride. Eric Parry jogged up the field unguarded and when he got to the midline, he unleashed a long distance shot that found the back of the net which sent the away fans into a frenzy. Cameron Crayk answered for the Chargers but Skyridge went on a three-goal run including another half field shot from Parry on a nearly identical play that continued to excite the fans on the sideline and gave momentum to the Falcons on the field. Neilsen would pull one back for the Chargers to make the halftime score 6-4 in favor of Corner Canyon.

The Chargers extended their lead out of the break but the Falcons once again went on a three-goal run to tie the game at 7. Corner Canyon didn’t relent and scored two more times to lower the home fans heart rates.

Skyridge tied the game with two goals in three minutes to start the fourth quarter. At that point, it was anyone’s game to win. With 6:53 left in regulation, Corner Canyon made the first move towards victory. DeGracie had the ball on the left side and with a no look pass, found Ashton Brown wide open on the crease. Brown scored to reclaim the lead. The lead didn’t last long though as Skyridge answered back 45 seconds later when Cabell Beuchner had a no look pass of his own to find Kaiden Hobbs on the crease who quick-sticked it in. Skyridge drew the next blow and took its first lead of the game when Dylan Forsgren scored low from the wing. The Falcon faithful believed. They believed they would win.

Brown had other ideas for the Chargers. The veteran senior attackman found space in the top middle of the zone and took a step down bounce shot to tie the game. Wentworth then won the faceoff and almost scored a goal of his own but missed the shot. The Chargers possessed but an errant pass gave the ball back to Skyridge. The Falcons easily cleared and held the ball to make sure the offensive personnel were on the field. Dominic Weaver swept to the left and skipped the ball to Johnson. Johnson paused, cradled, realized his defender wasn’t going to pressure then unleashed a dart to the top right corner to give the Falcons the lead. Skyridge won the faceoff and couldn’t convert, giving the ball back to Corner Canyon.

What came next is what legends are made of. Dutton had a shot go wide for the Chargers. DeGracie hit Adams in the helmet but the Chargers backed it up. On the restart, Neilsen fed Crayk on the crease but Adams made a point-blank save. He couldn’t control it and Luke Fisher grabbed the ball out of mid-air and scored. However, when Crayk took his shot, he entered the crease. The officials called off the goal and the Falcons cleared. A few seconds ticked off but the Falcons exited the box to give the ball back to Corner Canyon. The Chargers cleared and drew a push to give them a man-up opportunity. After moving the ball around the Falcons caused a turnover, cleared the ball and ran out the clock to secure the victory.

“You know, it’s probably twice as fun when it’s a team that has that much history here,” said Skyridge Head Coach Bart Butterfield. “They made us work for every single point and honestly, I think we played some of our best lacrosse of the year at the end of the year.”

The Falcons ended the reign of the Chargers who had dominated 6A since sanctioning and Class A before that. Entering the game, Corner Canyon was 36-5 in the playoffs in 12 seasons.

“You know, we’re playing with house money the whole time,” said Butterfield. “That’s been the message. There is no pressure on us. They are trying to maintain perfection and we just have to go out there and land one good jab and it happened.”

Adams made 18 saves for the Falcons.

“I think this is the best game of my career,” said Adams. “I think it’s only going up from here. I think keeping a positive and level mindset is the attitude that you need to keep throughout a game like this.”

The Falcons had five different goal scorers in Forsgren, Weaver, Hobbs and Johnson, but none bigger than the two by defensive midfielder Parry who entered the game with just 3 goals on the season. The savvy junior had two goals from beyond the midfield line.

“I think the unsung guy of the game, the low recognition was probably our D-middie Eric Parry,” said Butterfield. “He canned two half field shots in a 10-man ride and it really forced them to start reevaluating what they were doing. We practiced it a lot knowing we were going to see it this season and practice makes perfect.”

After the game I chatted with a few fellow lacrosse fans who were asking about teams from Utah County who had won championships.

According to my records, there have been seven other teams to win a championship. I’m just presenting the list, not diving into the nuances of iterations of Class B, Division II, etc. I’ll leave that up to the coaches and fans to do between games on the summer circuit. Here’s a list of Utah County champions:

• 2007 - Timpview, Class B - Rob Shaw led the T-birds to a 13-4 season and a win in the championship game over Logan.

• 2008 - Lone Peak, Class B - The great Randy Stout led the Knights to an undefeated season and beat Woods Cross in the title game.

• 2009 - Orem, Class B - The Tigers, led by Daniel Mortimer, beat Sky View in the championship game.

• 2010 - Timpanogos, Class B - Mike Schow, who you may recognize in refs stripes these days, led the T-Wolves to the title.

• 2011 - Spanish Fork Warriors, Division II - Phil Dunn led the Warriors to a title over Timpanogos.

• 2016 - Westlake, Class C - Erick Wiedmeier helped the Thunder beat Lehi in overtime.

• 2021 - Pleasant Grove, Class C - In the final game of the coaching career of Brae Burbidge, the Vikings beat Viewmont, 15-5.

• 2026 - Skyridge, 6A - See above.

Miners Control Game En Route to Sixth Championship

The best thing about 5A lacrosse is that you are guaranteed a heavyweight showdown in the championship. That was true once again, as No. 1 Park City and No. 2 Brighton slugged it out for the UHSAA 5A Boys Lacrosse Championship Saturday afternoon. These two blue-bloods of the sport faced off earlier this year, with Park City prevailing 5-3 over Brighton in a defensive battle. While Park City won the earlier matchup, they had revenge on the mind, as Brighton had come back to beat the Miners in the championship game the year before. For the Bengals, the last game of the season would come down to the Miners once again as they looked to secure another championship.

Brighton would look to prove that the three-goal outing last time against Park City was a fluke, as they would score on their first settled possession. Burton Klc would look to the reliable Gabe Carrera to get the Bengals on the board first, as Brighton would look to establish a fast tempo for this game. But it was the Miners who would look to play fast, as Reid McCurdy would force the turnover for Park City and push the fast break. Just as the Miners looked like they tied the game, the very edge of the plastic from Landon Stosich’s stick would tip the ball out of the goal. On the other end, Brighton would find Carrera wide open to extend its lead to two, if not for Max Gordon coming up with the huge save for Park City. The Miners would answer on offense as Henry Alnwick beat his defender on a sweeping cut, and Wade Birch delivered him the perfect pass to tie the game with less than a minute remaining. Just as the quarter looked to be over, Thomas Fannon would draw a penalty for the Miners and start the second quarter with possession.

While Park City wasn’t able to convert on their extra-man opportunity, the possession would prove vital as Crew Kimble, fading to X, hit a perfect lever pass to Hunter Hutchison on the crease to give the Miners the lead. Carson Riely would proceed to win the next faceoff and every faceoff in the second quarter for the Miners. Stosich would have an incredible save wiped out by a push into the crease, allowing Park City to keep the ball. Samuel Gould would make the extra chance count as he would pick up his own dropped pass, dodge down the lefty alley, and fire a low-to-low missile to increase the lead for Park City. On the next faceoff, Wyatt Knapp would knock the ball forward to himself, giving himself a fast break where he would find Alnwick to score for the Miners, only 15 seconds after their previous goal. Riely’s wings would come through for him again as Matix Black would deliver a huge hit on the faceoff and pick up the ground ball, giving Park City another possession. Allnwick would return the favor to Birch as the two connected again. Just as Alnwick looked like he was fading to X, he fired a pass to Birch on the crease, resulting in another goal for the Miners. If Riely hadn’t already made a big enough impact on this game, he secured his fantastic performance as he would win the faceoff to himself and score only 6 seconds after the previous goal for the Miners, resulting in a huge pop from the Park City faithful. Brighton would finally get the ball back on offense and let their myriad of shooters set up. Max Gordon would turn all of them away on the possession with three huge saves on Brighton’s best shooters, including a seemingly impossible kick save at the last moment. Park City couldn’t let such a fantastic performance go to waste, and Parker Jones would hit Thomas Fannon on the left wing for a picture-perfect low to high to the top right corner. Park City played nearly a perfect quarter of lacrosse in the second quarter and carried a 7-1 lead into halftime.

Brighton would look to seize momentum in the second half as they had in so many games before. If you give the Bengals an inch, they’ll take a mile. They had done so to Park City in the final last year, and they would strike first in the second half as Dylan Despain would split a double team and find Cole Murray, who made the extra pass to Zac Anderson to try and get the momentum rolling for Brighton. Sebastian Ramirez would win the following faceoff, a major factor in Brighton’s momentum swings, but Park City has seen this before. Matix Black would fly in from the wing and cause a turnover to give the ball and momentum back to Park City. Brett Hughes would sneak through the defense on a cut from X, and Alnwick would find him to answer right back for Park City. While Brighton would win the next faceoff, Max Gordon would stand tall once again, and the Miners would add to their lead as Hutchison would fade down the alley and fire a low to low burner to put Park City up by 7 once again. Park City looked like they had forced another turnover, but touched the ball at the last second as it went out of bounds. The Bengals would act quickly, and Anderson would find Owen Hanson to finish right on the crease for Brighton. The Bengals were able to get a run going as Anderson would get the defense hung up. Despain would find some space for Anderson to find him and rip a low-to-high snipe to the top right corner. Park City tried to end the run, but Carson Hanks made a risky, but perfectly timed slide on a fast break to keep Park City’s lead limited to 9-4 going into the final period.

No lead is too big against Brighton. In the semifinal, the Bengals scored six goals in less than three minutes to punch their ticket to this game. Last year in the final, a Brighton run in the fourth quarter crushed Park City’s championship dreams. Brighton looked to repeat that performance and Park City would do anything to prevent it. Riely won the opening faceoff of the period, halting Brighton’s momentum. Brighton was called for a penalty, which proved costly as Birch was left wide open on the wing to increase the Miners’ lead to six. Brighton would need a huge effort to come back against one of the best defenses in the state. Park City looked to extend their advantage, but Stosich came up huge for the Bengals to give them a chance. Gordon prevented any quick chances, but Carerra eventually broke through to cut the lead to five. Brighton wouldn’t score again until a minute left in the game, as Anderson’s diving attempt found a way through. But Brighton was never able to set up their fabled late-game comeback, as Riely controlled the tempo at the X, Park City’s offense played slow and controlled, and the Miners’ defense didn’t allow anything easy. Park City’s fans gave their team a rowdy standing ovation as their Miners secured the championship with the final score, 10-6.

“We’ve been trying to get better all year long,” said Park City Head Coach Mike Persky. “We’ve been focusing on getting the best shots not just good or average ones and I think the boys great job on the shot election and the defense has just been great all year long.”

The Miner’s defense made sure the Brighton stars couldn’t get in a groove.

“They have some great players, they have some great shooters,” said Persky. “Eric, my son, did a great job designing a plan to sort of just make sure we kept an eye, particularly on 15 [Gabe Carerra] and 6 [Zac Anderson] and the boys did a great job. They still put up six and made it close at the end. We got outstanding effort from Max Gordon and Carson Riely who studied film and studied film and studied film at the X and just battled.”

This is the fourth time the Miners boys and girls teams have won championships in the same years.

Ravens Youth Key in 4A Title Game Win Over Juan Diego

The 4A UHSAA Boys Lacrosse State Championship game featured the top two seeds in the class with No. 1 Juan Diego facing No. 2 Waterford. Both teams are very familiar with each other, having played twice this year, once in the regular season and again in the region championship game. Juan Diego won the regular-season matchup on 4/22, 11-10, in overtime. Waterford got its revenge in the region tournament on 5/8, 11-9. The tie-breaking contest couldn’t come with higher stakes, with the state championship on the line on a beautiful morning at Zions Bank Stadium.

From the opening faceoff, you could feel the electricity, nervousness and pressure in the air from both teams and their fan bases. Waterford would get the first chance on offense, but Logan Chould shut it down, forcing a crease violation. On the other end, Parker Stolz would pull up from the still-visible PLL 2-point arc and score the opening goal of the game for the Soaring Eagle. The nerves seemed to be getting to Waterford as the normally disciplined team would make a mistake in the substitution game and be called offside. Juan Diego would take advantage as Stolz would skip a pass across the defense to Noah Schuyler, who unselfishly made the extra pass to Jack Stoback for the goal. Waterford was given a golden opportunity to bounce back from the early deficit as a big hit during a ground ball scrum would net the Ravens a two-minute full-time man-up opportunity. Andrew Rurka would get Waterford on the board as he found space in the defense to fire a laser to the bottom corner. Juan Diego would win the next face, but Waterford would quickly force the turnover. Zander Petrovich’s shot would rebound right to Noah Chao and suddenly the game was tied once again. The championship jitters would strike both offenses as golden chances to take the lead were dropped right on the crease and the first quarter would end in a 2-2 deadlock.

Cooper Pecora was a standout for Juan Diego in the first quarter, winning 4 of 5 faceoffs. His dominance continued, and the Soaring Eagle came out firing in the second quarter, but Waterford goalie Sean O’Brien turned Juan Diego away. On the other end, Max Mishurda drew a penalty on a slick roll-back. On the extra-man opportunity, Noah Chao found Gavin Rurka through traffic to put the Ravens in front. Their lead wouldn’t last long, as Pecora won the next faceoff, leading to Chris Jimerson tying the game with a lethal step down from the outside. Waterford would stop Juan Diego’s roll at the faceoff X, but Michael Moore forced a turnover leading to a fast break. Stolz would find a cutting SSDM Brandon Backman to put Juan Diego on top once again. The physicality of the game took over from here, as a ground-ball scrum at the faceoff resulted in big hits, broken sticks and upset fans. Juan Diego would gain possession, leading to Schuyler wrapping from X to hit Trey Nicolodemos on the backside of the defense to score again. Both defenses would ramp up the pressure from here and neither offense could respond. Luke Hunter would force a turnover for Waterford, leading to a fast break, only for it to be shut down by Kai Faribanks, who knocked down the final pass. Waterford would get the last opportunity of the half, but Backman would shut down any chances, and the half would end with Juan Diego leading 5-3.

The defenses continued to dominate into the second half, and the goal drought persisted for both teams. Waterford kept attacking as they usually do, pulling the other team’s defensive midfielders into space and using their athleticism to create offense. However, Juan Diego’s SSDMs were up to the challenge. Backman and Aidan Janiga were excellent, especially in the third quarter, and didn’t allow any good opportunities for Waterford’s offense. Waterford remained patient and tried to initiate, eventually drawing a penalty on Juan Diego. The Ravens looked to have a chance on the extra-man, but the Soaring Eagle defense quickly collapsed on a cut from X, causing a turnover and killing the rest of the penalty. Waterford got one last opportunity at a goal, as a contested shot nearly trickled in, but goalie Brayden Andersen dove on the ball just in front of the goal line as the buzzer sounded for the end of the third quarter. The score remained 5-3 for Juan Diego.

Andrew Rurka would take the faceoff with his long pole in an attempt to slow down Pecora. The strategy was successful, as a well-timed check from Rurka led to a scrum that gave Waterford possession. Their offense would finally come alive as Gavin Rurka would win his match-up on the invert to get the defense moving, leading to Mishurda finding Kellen Kemper for the goal. Waterford would continue their LSM faceoff strategy as Luke Hunter would force another ground ball on the faceoff, which the Ravens would come up with. Andrew Rurka would tie the game off a screened shot that just crept in on the near pipe. Pecora would stop the bleeding on the faceoff X, giving Juan Diego possession for the first time in the quarter. Juan Diego had two great looks to retake the lead, but, just like the semifinal, Sean O’Brien turned into a brick wall in the fourth quarter. The freshman goalie had two big saves, and Kemper’s diving effort would win the runout, giving Waterford the ball once again. With 5:11 remaining, the Ravens would call timeout and look to take the lead. Andrew Rurka would put the team on his back once again as he found some space down the lefty alley and scored through contact to give Waterford the lead. Pecora would win the faceoff to give Juan Diego a chance to tie, but Luke Hunter would force the turnover, giving Waterford a chance to put the game away. However, an interference violation on the clear gave Juan Diego another chance. They would convert as Westley Buck would feed Nicolodemos on crease to tie the game with only 2:23 remaining. Pecora would give Juan Diego the ball with a chance to take the lead, but O’Brien came up with a clutch save, leading to Waterford calling timeout with 1:26 remaining.

Fans were on their feet as they looked on to see who would be the hero and lead their team to their first 4A state championship. Waterford would look to Max Mishurda, the speedy junior midfielder, to initiate the offense. Max found space down the left alley and made his way to the crease. Finding a sliver of sunlight, Mishurda forced a pass through the middle of the defense, somehow finding Gavin Rurka, surrounded by Juan Diego defenders. Rurka only had a moment to get the shot off, finding the back of the net to give the Ravens the lead with only 45 seconds remaining. Waterford would back off on the faceoff, letting Pecora win it back to himself. Juan Diego called its final timeout with 36 seconds remaining, attempting to send the game to overtime. The Soaring Eagle would turn to 4-year starter Noah Schuyler who would find some space on the wing, dive bombing towards the crease, finding just enough space to get the shot off, but it went just wide, leaving Juan Diego with 16 seconds. Schuyler would wrap the crease to his left hand, and the entire Waterford defense would collapse on him. The last gasp for Juan Diego was blocked, sending the ball well wide of the goal, sealing the win and the state championship for Waterford.

Waterford has one of the smallest rosters in the state, often relying on offensive personal to also play defense.

“We’re the Waterford militia,” said Waterford Head Coach Will Manny. “We play 14 guys and Andrew Ruka is a warrior, right? Gavin and Max are our two way guys. Danny Hodge, you know, plays D-mid as a freshman. I start five freshmen. In those moments you go to guys you trust the most and have been in the most lacrosse games. I asked and Kellen said, ‘I’m good’. We just we look around and say who’s good, and then we get the thumbs up and you’re out there on defense. And that’s how we roll.”

O’Brien, just a freshman, was the standout in cage for the Ravens.

“This past week I reached out to a bunch of my friends who are pro lacrosse players and I got Colin Kirst and Blaze Riorden to send Sean a hype video,” said Manny. “They sent him videos about just being present, moving on to the next play and that was the best game he’s played all season long, as a freshman to be able to do that with his confidence. I don’t think he lets much get to him and I credit Coach Z [Zion Dechesere] for sticking with him all season long, the amount of time they spend together, it’s for these moments, especially as a freshman. The first one went in and then he just settled into the game which is what playing lacrosse game is all about.”

This is the Ravens sixth championship. I noticed Waterford Athletic Teams Coordinator Craig Morris standing to the side during the ribbon cutting ceremony. Morris has been on the sideline either as a coach or admin at each of the Ravens championships.

“This one feels amazing,” said Morris. “It feels as good as all the others. They’ve worked so hard to get them back in this position and then to to play the kind of game they did and gut it out and come back and they’ve been doing that all season long. It’s it’s just fantastic and just so proud of the boys and what they represent.”

The setting was familiar: Zions Bank Stadium. The weather was as expected: cloudy in the morning, hot in the afternoon, but overall a classic May day.

In 6A, two semifinal teams from last year made the championship game, with No. 1 Skyridge and No. 2 Riverton. In 5A, the familiar red, black, and white of the Park City Miners returned. Their opponent: a newcomer to 5A in the Fremont Silverwolves, who are no strangers to the championship game, having won the 6A title in 2024. And then, ‘The Queens of 4A,’ Bear River once again found itself in Herriman in May. This time, the Provo Bulldogs were the contender.

Riverton Wins 6A Championship in Overtime

The Riverton Silverwolves are the 2026 6A champions after defeating the top-seeded Skyridge Falcons, 8-7, in a match that went into overtime, and could have gone either way until the very end.

“These close games, they build tenacity,” said Silverwolves Head Coach Hannah Kelleher.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth between the Falcons and the Silverwolves, with Skyridge keeping the advantage at all times. They led at the end of the first quarter 4-3, thanks to goals from senior Tessa Jamison and sophomore Geneva Barfuss, and kept Riverton scoreless in the second quarter, going into the half 6-3.

In the second half, both teams turned up the pressure, resulting in a bevy of yellow cards for both teams, including multiple for delay of game. Early in the third quarter, senior Maggie Bird and junior Suli Tafisi each scored to bring Riverton within one point of Skyridge. The Falcons then widened the gap for the last time when sophomore Sophia Fife scored, bringing the score to 7-5. Then, with just over two minutes left in the third, Riverton senior Paisley Young was able to close the gap once again with a goal from a free position, sending the teams into a fourth-quarter showdown 7-6.

The last seven minutes of the game were amazing.

Skyridge tried to gain control, but a block by Riverton goalie senior Isabel Simonsen turned the ball over and allowed Bird to run it downfield and tie it up 7-7 with just over five minutes to go. Riverton then called a timeout and came back on the field ready to run out the clock and wait out the Skyhawks until the very last minute.

It seemed the game would be over when Skyridge allowed Riverton to gain a free position for a shooting space violation, but Falcon goalie senior Leilani Fiefia blocked not one, but two attempts by the Silverwolves to score, and gave control of the ball back to Skyridge.

With just 41 seconds on the clock, it was now the Falcons’ turn to try to end the game with a free position. Sophomore Summer Buechner had a chance but the Riverton defensive duo of Ella Frisby and Makinley Nixon jarred the ball loose which put the ball on the turf allowing time to expire.

Buechner made another attempt at a shot early in the extra period, only to have it blocked by Simonsen. With just over a minute left to go, Skyridge was in possession, but lost the opportunity when Frisby snagged a ground ball and fed it to Simonsen, who gave it to Bird, who ran it across the field. The ball was passed to Young who drew the defense out then Bird slipped behind, caught the feed and scored.

“I just knew that we just had to get the ball to our side, and I knew that once we did that, we would be able to score,” Bird said.

Bird and Tafisi finished with 3 goals each for Riverton. This is the first championship for Riverton after back-to-back semifinal losses in the last two years.

Park City Captures Ninth Championship

Park City once again claimed the 5A championship after defeating the Fremont Silverwolves, 19-9.

The deadly duo of junior Sophia Mondschien and sophomore Natalia Swzajkun took control of the game early for the Miners, pulling the team to an 8-3 lead in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the pair kept up the pressure, and sophomore Hadley Flach, senior Coco Crawford, and senior Olivia Dalton added to it with their own goals. It did lead to some missteps, though, and to two yellow cards, which allowed Fremont’s senior Kate Jenkins and junior Clara McCormick to score from free positions. McCormick then scored another point from a free position for the Silverwolves with just over a minute left. Still, the Miners led going into the half, 12-6.

While Fremont wasn’t able to pull ahead, or even get close in the second half, they did have some good moments to finish the season. During the third quarter the team had a pair of power shots resulting in goals during free positions. Junior Makenzi Overdiek, and freshman Hadley Jeppsen both found the back of the net. But, Park City still continued their domination, adding three more points for Crawford, Dalton, and Swazjkun.

In the fourth quarter the game took a very physical turn, with both teams being called on conduct and a series of yellow – and one red – cards.

Park City took advantage of Fremont having players sidelined and quickly scored three in quick succession.

Then, in an amazing play, Park City goalie Mckenszie Darling came out of the box, only to have the ball knocked from her stick by Overdiek, who then fed it to senior Brylee Jeppson for the goal.

Park City had the final word though when Crawford score the 19th goal for the team in the final seconds of the fourth quarter, giving the Miners back-to-back 5A victories.

“I think with this group it just has come from everyone,” said Park City Head Coach Adam Ghitelman. “We have great senior leadership, but all the way through from our freshmen, sophomores, juniors, everybody contributed. I think that these girls they found their best across at the end of the year when you want to be your best version and that and that’s the goal always, right?”

Swzajkun had 8 goals and an assist for the Miners.

“She’s been special all year for us almost all amazing players that we have our team, so yeah, she’s just unbelievable girl,” said Ghitelman. “She she’s the girl that when, you know, you turned the lights off and everyone goes home, she’s still out there shooting the ball, and I think that’s a great lesson to all the younger girls in our team.”

Perfect In The Playoffs, Bear River Wins 5th Title

The Bear River Bears are still the only team to win a 4A Girls’ Lacrosse championship in the state of Utah, after taking down the Provo Bulldogs in the final, 14-3. The Bears are a perfect 18-0 in the playoffs.

The Bulldogs were never ahead in the game, but the score only tells part of the tale.

In the first half of the game, Bear River had control of the ball for the majority of the time. The tenacious seniors Brooklyn Briel and Ella Criddle, and sophomore Mollie Call, were all able to score during this time, but the Bulldogs were able to control the Bears for the most part thanks to defensive maneuvers by senior Alexis Tucker, sophomore Annabel Ashton, and sophomore Kate Andelin, plus the power of junior goalie Brooke Jensen in the net. At the halftime break, Bear River was up 6-2.

The third quarter is when the Bulldogs started to get tired, and that’s when the Bears were able to really pull ahead. Provo was able to score one more point in the third quarter thanks to senior Emma Parke, but after that, Bear River ran away with it, scoring five points in the third and three more in the fourth. Call added to her totals, with freshman Paisley Briel, sophomore Jeanine Webb, and senior Emma Kierstead each scoring a goal as well. The final goal went to Criddle, her fifth of the game, who got it in with just 20 seconds to go.

Criddle finished with 5 goals while Call finished with 4 goals. Webb had a goal and 4 assist.

The Bears continue to get better and better each year and the culture of the program is as strong as ever.

One of the privileges I have covering this great sport is getting a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes moments. Over the last two days, I noticed how many tears were shed, both in victory and in defeat.

For coaches, those tears come from the hours they’ve poured into their teams and the joy of reaching a championship game. On the other side, there were coaches who cried because their season was over, and the group they spent the last year with will never be the same again. For some, it may have even been the last game they will ever coach.

For players, the tears come for all kinds of reasons. Pain, disappointment, pride and for their teammates. For some, it is the realization that their playing days are over. The sport they love to play suddenly becomes something they once played.

And then there are the parents and fans. They have spent countless hours in the stands, supporting their son or daughter, their friend, their teammate, someone they care about. They become part of the fabric of the program. So when the players and coaches shed a tear, they feel it too, and they shed one right along with them.

Boys’ 4A Semifinal Recap

The 4A semifinal opener saw No. 1 Juan Diego beat No. 4 Green Canyon, 15-8. The Soaring Eagle carved out a 4-0 lead in the first quarter with goals by Parker Stolz, Kai Fairbanks, Jameson Wigton and Cooper Pecora. The Wolves scored with 4 seconds left in the quarter when Bennett Steed found space in the middle of the field on a sweep and bounced it in.

Fairbanks kicked off the scoring in the second quarter just 11 seconds in when Juan Diego won the faceoff and dished it to Fairbanks who took it the distance and scored. Stolz scored next for the Soaring Eagle before Bryson Papst of Green Canyon pulled one back. Juan Diego answered right back and just wouldn't let the Wolves get an advantage. Juan Diego took a comfortable 8-4 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was all Juan Diego who scored 5 goals and allowed just 1. The fourth quarter was won by the Wolves, 3-2, to make the final score 15-8.

”The boys came out and responded well,” said Juan Diego Head Coach Brad Tack. “Everyone was hustling and making plays.”

Noah Schuyler finished with 3 goals and 3 assists for Juan Diego. Trey Nicolodemous had 2 goals and 3 assists. Cooper Pecora won 21 of 25 faceoffs.

The second semifinal saw No. 2 Waterford and No. 3 Bear River matched up in a hard-nosed contest.

The first quarter was back-and-forth as teams went blow for blow. Andrew Rurka opened the scoring for Waterford, and LSM Luke Hunter scored again 30 seconds later, giving Waterford a quick 1-2 punch to start the game. Waterford looked to extend their lead, but goalie Daxton Chairez stood tall with two big saves on one possession. Bear River bounced back with a three-goal run of their own, with goals from Preston Wilkinson, Makye Rupp and Jace Gardner, who beat the defense with an impressive toe-drag to score. Waterford struck back in the substitution game, as Max Mishurda had a free run to goal, drew the defender, and found Kellen Kemper for the goal. The Bears made their own luck on their next goal, as a ground ball slipped through the defense and found Tucker Nielson for the goal. Waterford tied the game with five seconds left in the quarter, as Kemper forced the issue on an over-and-back, drawing a slide to find Pierce Hauber, who cashed in the opportunity, ending the quarter with the score tied at four.

Wylon Loveland’s hot start at the faceoff X carried into the second quarter, and the Bears would open the scoring quickly as Linkoln White found Ty Hess on a perfectly timed cut to the crease. At this point, Waterford was tired of the back-and-forth action and would go on a 6-goal run in less than five minutes to completely break the game open for the Ravens. The combination of Faceoff Specialist Aaron Sakaguchi and LSM Luke Hunter, on the wing and taking faceoffs himself, would swing the momentum in favor of the Ravens. Andrew Rurka would start the scoring run off an assist from Noah Chao. Hauber would score the next two, one solo and one assisted by Chao. Just as Bear River seemed to stop the run with a big save by Chairez, Max Mishurda turned on the burners to run down the outlet, cause a turnover, push the fast break, and find Kemper for the goal. Gavin Rurka must have been tired of Andrew getting all the glory, as he would assist the next two goals for the Ravens by winning his one-on-one match-up and finding open teammates Kemper and Hauber. Bear River would try to get back in the game and ended the quarter with some momentum as Linkoln White’s shot would be saved by Raven goalie Sean O’Brien, but the rebound would fall to Jace Gardner, who scored for the Bears. Just as the teams seemed ready to head into the half, Wilkinson would scoop up an overthrown Raven pass at the midline, push the fast break, and hit Gardner, who scored once again with only five seconds remaining, making the score 10-7 for Waterford at the half.

Waterford started the second half strong as Noah Chao scored on a snakey lefty jump shot from X, extending their lead to four. Bear River began to claw back once again. A Waterford fast break was a little too fast, and Bear River transitioned into their own fast break, leading to a goal by Gardner from Wilkinson. Bear River would get a man-up opportunity on a hold and cash in as Gardner assisted White. Loveland would win the next faceoff for the Bears, and Bear River would call a timeout to capitalize on the crucial possession. Waterford would come out of the timeout in a zone defense, and Wilkinson would find an answer with a bouncer from the outside, cutting Waterford’s lead to one. Just as things seemed to be going Bear River’s way, Sakaguchi would win the faceoff to Luke Hunter, who would kick off the fast break, leading to a Noah Chao goal and seizing all momentum for Waterford. Hunter wasn’t satisfied with just assists; he would score again, running through the help defense to extend the lead. Mishurda would show off his athleticism and toughness once again with a great roll dodge, finishing through contact to cap the three-goal run for the Ravens. Bear River would end the quarter strong with another goal by Gardner, making the score 14-11 for Waterford going into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was the Sean O’Brien show for Waterford, as the freshman goalie would snuff out any and all opportunities for Bear River. O’Brien turned defense into offense, kicking off a fast break after a big save, and LSM Luke Harper would finish his hat trick with an assist from Kemper. Following another O’Brien save, Mishurda would sweep the defense to find Kemper again, extending the lead. Kemper would find Andrew Rurka on the man-up to cap off an impressive fourth quarter and overall performance for the Ravens against a tough and scrappy Bear River team, by the score of 17-11.

For Waterford, it felt like anyone who stepped on the offensive half of the field made critical plays at the right time. Pierce Hauber had 4 goals, Kellen Kemper had 4 goals and an assist, and if you looked at the box score, you’d have no idea that Luke Hunter is an LSM, as he scored 3 goals and an assist for the Ravens.

“It’s a special group,” said Waterford Head Coach Will Manny. “We’ve been really good at playing in the moment and we found a groove in the second half and we’re playing really good lacrosse right now which is all I can ask for as a coach.”

No. 1 Juan Diego and No. 2 Waterford will faceoff in the 4A championship on Saturday at 10:00am at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman. Juan Diego won the first regular-season matchup, 11-10, in overtime. Waterford then beat the Soaring Eagle on May 8 in the Region 10 title game, 11-9.

Juan Diego has made it to six championship games in its history. Last year, the Soaring Eagle fell to Judge, 15-4, in the 4A championship. In 2017, Juan Diego beat Brighton, 10-9, in the Class A championship. In 2016, the Soaring Eagle lost to Brighton, 8-6, in the Class A championship. The Soaring Eagle won back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013 in the Division I ranks. Its first championship appearance was in 2004 when they lost to Waterford, 12-5, in the Division I championship.

For Waterford, this is the twelfth appearance in a championship game spanning back to the first championship game in 1994. Waterford has won 5 times (2003 Division I, 2004 Division I, 2006 Division I, 2013 Division II, 2016 Class B)

Boys’ 5A Semifinal Recap

No. 1 Park City controlled the game from end-to-end en route to beating No. 12 East, 12-6 to advance to its eighth straight championship game.

Park City started fast and never slowed down. Henry Alnwick and Brett Hughes got on the board early for the Miners, both goals coming within the first three minutes of the game. However, it would take only 14 seconds for East to respond as Reilly Pearson-Ortolani would win the faceoff and find Cade Black to get the Leopards on the board. Normally, for East, a goal like that is just what they need to get rolling, and it’s important to slow the game down. Park City, however, wanted to play faster. Wade Birch got the offense moving with assists on back-to-back goals to Hunter Hutchinson and Thomas Fannon, the second coming with a minute left in the quarter. Just when the Miners thought they had a comfortable 4-1 lead at the end of the first, East would score again only 9 seconds later as Reilly Pearson-Ortolani would win the face-off into a fast break and Cade Black would find Oscar Keegan for the goal.

The second quarter played out nearly identically to the first. A two-goal Park City run answered by an immediate goal by East, followed by another Park City run, for three goals this time, followed by an East goal to end the quarter. Hutchinson would kick off the scoring for the Miners, and Alnwick would add to his total. Not to be outdone by his brother, Bailey Pearson-Ortolani would get on the board for East off an assist by Eli Brink. Park City would bounce right back, however, as Birch would score his first goal of the afternoon, then assist Alnwick on the next goal for the Miners. Hutchinson would cap the three-goal run and stretch Park City’s lead. Once again, East would bounce back the Pearson-Ortolani connection as Reilly would feed Will for the goal, which put Park City’s lead at 9-4 going into the half.

Bailey Pearson-Ortolani must have felt left out and decided to get on the scoreboard as well with the first goal of the second half. Park City would answer, as they usually did, with a two-goal run. First by Tommy Davis, then by Crew Kimble with the assist from Alnwick. East would score the last goal of the quarter once again as another Pearson-Ortolani combination was effective, and Bailey would find Reilly for the goal, cutting the lead to 11-6 going into the fourth quarter.

East is no stranger to rallying from large deficits, as they have against many teams this season. Unfortunately for the Leopards, they were up against one of the few defenses that could keep up with their blend of size, skill, and speed. The Miners were everywhere. Just as you thought you had them beat, you’d roll back into a double team. You think you have an easy ground ball, and suddenly it’s a fast break the other way. Even if you managed to get by the defense, you had to get a shot past senior goalie Max Gordon, who had 10 saves on the day as the Miners shut out the highly potent Leopards offense in the 4th quarter. Wade Birch would score once more to cap off a dominant Park City victory with the score of 12-6.

No. 2 Brighton defeated the No. 3 seeded Alta and cross-town rival, 16-10, in the nightcap.

At the beginning of the game, the energy in the air was palpable. Both fan bases, especially the student sections, were looking for something to excite them. Ryder Linford would get the Brighton fans on their feet as he caused a turnover, which Gabe Carrera turned into a breakaway goal. Alta would respond right away as Jace Brown would score a brilliant backhanded goal on a wraparound from X, drawing loud cheers from Alta’s student section. It’s hard to say the play of the game happened early in the first quarter of a semifinal playoff game, especially one that was nearly tied in the fourth quarter. However, when it comes to a goalie goal, it is always the play of the game1. Brighton goalie Landon Stosich would get the ball on the clear and see no one in front of him, so he jogs the ball up the field. Suddenly, he’s past the midline, and no one is guarding him. Even more suddenly, he’s in the box, and no one is guarding him as he winds up a shot; no one is guarding him, so Stosich shoots and scores.

The Brighton fans and players exploded in cheers and carried that momentum as Carrera would net two more, scoring a hat-trick in the first quarter. It would take Alta six more minutes following the goalie goal to get on the board again. JJ Massi would hit his patented hitch step to free up his left hand to score for Alta. The Hawks would win the following face-off, but Declan Carrera would force the turnover, leading to a Zac Anderson goal with 41 seconds remaining. Alta didn’t want Brighton to go on another run, and Beckham Horoba snatched back the momentum by scoring with 17 seconds left in the quarter, which ended with the score at 5-3.

Alta would get an extra-man opportunity early in the quarter, but Stosich would prove he can do more than just score goals, making three big saves on the Bengals’ possession. Brighton would convert on their next two possessions with goals from Dylan Despain, who would then assist Anderson on the Bengals’ next goal. Alta needed to find a way to regain momentum, and Cole Haddock would drive through the heart of Brighton’s defense to score after the faceoff. Anderson and Brighton would bounce back as he scored again, completing his first-half hat trick. By this point, Gabe Carrera was drawing a lot of attention from the defense and used it to his advantage to find Despain open for another goal. Trevor Goins would cut into the lead with a wrap-around goal for Alta, sending the teams into halftime with the score 9-5 for Brighton.

Alta needed to find a way to fight back into this game, but Stosich turned them away twice on their opening possession. Brighton would then convert on an extra-man opportunity as Burton Klc scored for the Bengals. Luckily for Alta, Kellen Torina found a groove at the faceoff X, winning the next three faceoffs for the Hawks. Goins would score an over-the-shoulder goal on an assist from Jace Brown. Alta would then convert on an extra-man opportunity as Goins fed Horoba for the goal. Alta goalie Bridger Tueller made some huge saves at the end of the quarter to keep Brighton’s lead at 10-7 going into the final period.

Alta capitalized on a failed Brighton clear early in the quarter when Goins found Colby Blackham on the fast break, cutting the lead to two. Both teams had close calls at goal as Carrera hit the post and Stosich was forced into a great save, each looking to break through. Horoba came up clutch for Alta, sneaking a shot near post on the wrap from X, cutting the Brighton lead to one. Then, Brighton went on a run. It’s such an easy sentence to write, but it’s impossible to describe how it feels. Nobody feeds off momentum like Brighton. One little spark causes an inferno that is impossible to extinguish. It can be something as simple as Ramirez winning the faceoff and drawing a penalty. Carrera feeds to Anderson, goal, Brighton by 2. Ramirez wins the faceoff again and hits Carrera, goal, Brighton by 3. Ramirez wins again; Cole Murray finds Carrera, goal; Brighton by 4. Ramirez wins again; penalty on Alta; Luke Cole finds Carrera; goal; Brighton by 5. Ramirez needs a break. Peter Skinner comes in, wins the faceoff, and Brighton calls a timeout. Bode Linford starts top right, sprints all the way around the goal, wraps, and scores, Brighton by 6. All of that happened in a little more than three minutes of game time. Alta went from down by 1, ready to tie, to down 6, wondering what just hit them. Each team would tack on another goal, but it had already been decided. With one run, Brighton flipped the game on its head and advanced to the 5A UHSAA Boys Lacrosse Championship game.

The Bengals will once again face Park City in the 5A championship. The game will be at 1:00pm on Saturday at Zions Bank Stadium. The Miners won the regular-season game, 5-3, on April 3.

Park City has been the last team Brighton has played each season for the last seven seasons.

• 2023: Park City beats Brighton, 10-8, in the 5A semifinals.

• 2022: Park City beats Brighton, 19-7, in the 5A quarterfinals.

• 2019: Park City beats Brighton, 8-7, in the Class A championship.

• 2018: Park City beats Brighton, 7-6, in the Class A championship.

This game will be the tenth championship game for Brighton and the eleventh for Park City.

Boys’ 6A Semifinal Recap

The No. 1 Corner Canyon Chargers advanced to the 6A championship game with a dominant 22-3 win over No. 4 Mountain Ridge.

Corner Canyon jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the first quarter of play with Kampton Dutton and Pierson DeGracie taking part in all but one. The scoring began with DeGracie who scored the opening goal on a sweep through the defense. Dutton scored back-to-back goals that were assisted by DeGracie within 36 seconds to give the Chargers the 3-0 lead. DeGracie capitalized on a fast restart and scored then Dutton scored the next two. Ren Neilsen scored at the 2:47 mark for the Chargers then DeGracie closed the scoring in the first quarter

The second quarter saw Cameron Crayk get a goal for Corner Canyon then Mountain Ridge scored its first goal of the game when Trace Hook found the back of the net. The Chargers added 5 straight goals to close out the half.

The second half was more of the same with the Chargers securing its 6th straight championship berth. Corner Canyon is playing great lacrosse at the right time.

In the second 6A semifinal, Skyridge used a strong second half to beat Farmington, 14-10 to advance to its first championship game.

The Falcons came out hot and had back-to-back goals by Dane Lambert. Dominic Weaver added a goal with 5:43 left in the first quarter to give Skyridge a 3-0 lead. The Phoenix fought back and scored when Wyatt Salmon stepped down and found the back of the net. Weaver would score again for the Falcons then Josh Vashaw pulled one back for Farmington when he got a feed from X from Salmon, turned and fired a shot into the goal. Dylan Forsgren extended the Skyridge lead to 3 with 40 seconds left in the quarter when he roll dodged towards the middle of the field and got his hands free and shot top shelf.

Forsgren opened the scoring in the second quarter when the Falcons beat the Farmington 10-man ride and found themselves with a numbers advantage that led to a goal. Farmington stopped the momentum when Hudson Anderson collected a ball at midfield and led a fast break that went to Kai Beynon who found Cole Smith who buried the ball. Kaiden Hobbs added a goal for Skyridge when the Falcons defense caused a turnover and converted on a fast break. Grayson Sant scored a minute later for Farmington when he collected his own rebound and slotted it near pipe. On the ensuing faceoff, Eli Wallace won the faceoff and scored for the Phoenix, making the score 7-5 in favor of the Falcons. Smith scored late in the quarter for Farmington on a fast break when Austin Briggs collected a loose ball on the defensive end and took it the distance, finding Smith who shot low to high and stung the top right corner, making the score 7-6 for Skyridge at the break.

A three-goal run to open the quarter for the Falcons was ultimately the difference that Farmington couldn't overcome. Tamanuitoi Johnson, Cabell Beuchner and Weaver were the scorers for Skyridge. Farmington found the net at the 1:05 mark when Salmon found Smith for the goal.

A four-goal run began the fourth quarter for Skyridge to make the score 14-7 midway through the fourth. Farmington didn't give up and pushed hard to score three more goals to make the final score, 14-10. The Falcons are flying high and ready to take on the Chargers.

The 6A Championship will be held at 4:00pm on Saturday at Zions Bank Stadium. In the regular-season matchup, Corner Canyon won 15-10. Corner Canyon has won 6 championships: 2015 and then 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025. This will be the first championship game for Skyridge.

Girls’ 4A Semifinal Recap

No. 1 Bear River is not ready to let another team take the 4A championship. Coming into the game, the team was on a 20-0 winning streak, and extended it by overtaking No. 5 Timpanogos, 20-1. They now will go on to play the Provo Bulldogs in the final.

Top scorer Mollie Call made the first goal of the day within seconds of the start of the first quarter, her first of six points for the game. Captain Jeanine Webb then brought the score two 2-0 with her first of five points total. Bear River ended the quarter up 5-0 going into the second.

Here they still kept the Timberwolves scoreless, but not for lack of trying on the part of Timpanogos. While they had possession for almost half of the game they just couldn’t get past Bear defensive players like senior Alyssa Brielle and junior Sydnee Pehrson whom coach Jeremy Webb called the “heart and soul” of the team. Even when the Timberwolves broke through the Bear River defensive line they were shut down by goalie Tristin Smart.

It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that Timpanogos got on the board. With less than four minutes to go Senior Jada Intharath was able to find the back of the net when Smart stepped out.

“The offense was selfless today,” said Bear River Head Coach Jeremy Webb. “We don’t care who scores. What matters is that we play how we practice every day. We get excited for anyone who scores.”

In the second 4A semifinal, it was the Bulldogs versus the Bulldogs as No. 2 Provo took on No. 3 Judge Memorial to see who would face Bear River in the finals. Judge scored first, with senior Tessa Fowler going from defense to offense for the goal. Provo junior Ashlyn Moser then answered back, setting up a 1-1 game. By the end of the quarter, it was 2-2.

The second quarter saw the teams trading blows equally, with Moser getting two more goals for Provo, and junior Claire Chambers and senior Emma Parke each scoring one. It wasn’t enough to keep Judge at bay, though, and thanks to goals by sophomore Sofia Delpouys, junior Caroline Chachas, and junior Tess Jacobsen, the Bulldogs from Salt Lake led at the half 7-6.

The tables turned in the third quarter though, with Provo putting on a surge and senior Paige Barry tying things up in the first 15 seconds. The back and forth continued, and it looked to be anyone’s game, but Provo was able to score six more, while Judge only added four to their score, going into the quarter, 12-11.

Parke got her third goal of the game in the first moments of the fourth quarter, and from there Provo continued to wide the gap, hitting 16 points within four minutes of the start of the quarter. Then they slowed it down, keeping Judge from making any big moves, and only allowing them two more points, ending the game 16-13.

“This is a huge honor, all of us know how special this moment is,” said Provo Head Coach Megan Jensen. “This is a very special team, and we feel super grateful and super excited.”

The 4A Championship will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday at Zions Bank Stadium.

Girls’ 5A Semifinal Recap

It was a hot start for No. 1 Park City as their scoring duo of sophomore Natalia Szwajkun and junior Sophia Mondschein hit the field ready to score. Mondschien drew blood first, scoring against No. 5 Salem Hills in the early minutes of the first quarter. She and Szwajkun then traded off goals until the Miners were up 6-0 going into the second quarter.

For most of the second quarter, it looked like the Skyhawks might remain scoreless, with Park City’s defense setting up a wall of white around their goal. It seemed like midfielder freshman Georgia Kostuchenko was EVERYWHERE, stopping balls. With just over four minutes left, junior Ruby Lindstrom finally broke through, putting Salem Hills on the board. Lindstrom also scored the second point of the game for the Skyhawks in a penalty shot caused when Mondschein got a yellow card for a check to the head. Then, with just seconds to go in the half, junior Rachel Turner got one more in, bringing it up to three for Salem Hills at the half.

That was enough for the Miners. They allowed the Skyhawks just one more point when captain Lina Hughes forced a turnover in the third quarter and fed it to Turner for the team’s fourth and final score of the game.

At the 11-minute mark in the fourth quarter, the clock started running as Park City topped 14 points thanks to moves by Mondschein, Szwajkun, Kostuchenko, and juniors Avery Blair and Sydney Hatcher. Senior Annie Ellie scored the final point of the game with two minutes to go, giving Park City the win 16-4.

“How lucky are we to have our last line of defense be Mckinsey Darling,” said Park City Head Coach Adam Ghitelman. “The defense is spectacular and such an experienced group and play well together. Defense wins championships, we’re lucky to have that back line.”

Szwajkun led the Miners with 6 goals and 1 assist. Mondschein had 3 goals while Blair and Coco Crawford each had 2 goals.

In the most exciting contest of the day No. 2 Fremont took on No. 6 Olympus in a game that ended in an overtime finish that will be debated for some time to come.

The Silverwolves had the upper hand in the first quarter, scoring a total of seven, while Olympus scored just two. That was flipped in the second quarter, with Olympus goalie Halle Peterson shutting out all attempts by Fremont, while the Titan offense was able to score four on Silverwolves goalie Greeley Kelley. The half ended 7-6 with Fremont in the lead.

The third quarter was fiery as both teams turned up the heat. In the first minute of the third quarter, junior Amberly Boyce tied it up seven all for the Titans. Then Olympus briefly took the lead thanks to a shot from junior Amelia Bell.

The lead didn’t last for long, and junior Makenzi Overdiek evened things out for Fremont with a penalty shot. Senior and captain, Brylee Jeppsen, then put Fremont back in the lead for her first of two goals in the third quarter. Along with a goal from junior Ava Jewett, the Silverwolves went into the final quarter 11-9.

Then things got even wilder.

In the first moments of the fourth quarter, Fremont seemed to be running away with the win, with back-to-back goals from Jeppsen and freshman Avery Jenkins. A red card was then called on sophomore Kenlee Mitton, giving Olympus an opportunity, which they took. Junior Amberly Boyce scored twice in the last four minutes of the game, and then sophomore Zaria Rubsamen took a penalty shot with two minutes left in the game to send it into overtime, tied at 13.

It seemed to be all over when Olympus sophomore Mia Gabbart ran the ball downfield and took a shot that appeared to go in, but didn’t. Olympus began to celebrate but the officials conferred and concluded it didn’t go in. Fremont took it to the other end and earned a free position opportunity. With under a minute remaining in the overtime period, junior Clara McCormick scored her only goal of the game and took it home for Fremont.

“We just knew we needed to put in the grind in order to win,” said Fremont Head Coach Seth Jones. “It was a blast. I lost my voice screaming and we did a great job.”

Greeley finished with 11 saves for Fremont. Jeppsen and Overdeik had 4 goals and 1 assist each.

No. 1 Park City will take on No. 2 Fremont at 4:00pm on Thursday at Zions Bank Stadium.

Girls’ 6A Semifinal Recap

No. 1 Skyridge took on No. 4 Lone Peak for their third meeting of the year, and Skyridge was first to put a goal on the board, with sophomore Liv Enger hitting the back of the net. The Falcons kept it up throughout the first half with senior Tessa Jamison scoring four, and sophomores Sophia Fife and Sage Curtis each scoring three. By the end of the first half, Skyridge was up 16-4. This, despite the best efforts of senior Norah Lisonbee and the rest of the Knights.

Skyridge kept up their onslaught in the second half with the clock running the whole time. At one point, the Falcons were up 22-4 before Knight seniors Clara Terry and Lucy McMurray each scored one to bring it up to 22-6. Enger then pulled one more goal for Skyridge, and it ended 23-6.

“Our defense was incredible today,” said Skyridge Head Coach Michelle Beuchner. “This was one of our best games and we have a lot of trust and confidence in each other.”

Summer Buechner finished with 5 goals and 7 assists for Skyridge and also had 15 draw controls.

In the night cap, No. 2 Riverton beat No. 3 Mountain Ridge, 12-11. It was the perfect way to end the day for lacrosse fans as both teams put on a show.

Suli Tafisi opened the scoring, giving Riverton the early 1-0 lead. Great ball movement by Riverton led to a goal by Marlei Young extend the Silverwolves lead to 2. Next, Cara Erramouspe led a fast-break for Riverton and found Young wide open. Young buried it to make the score 3-0 for Riverton. With under a minute play in the first quarter, Lucy Rigby scored for Mountain Ridge on a free-position to cut the Riverton lead to 2.

Mountain Ridge scored first in the second quarter with Kaitlyn Selway finding the back of the net. Rigby tied the game at the 8 minute mark off a free-position shot that hit the top left corner. Riverton answered with a back-to-back free-position goals as by Paisley Young and Maggie Bird. Both teams would continue to battle and trade goals, leading to a 7-5 halftime score in favor of Riverton.

The second half was neck and neck and each team remembered that a trip to the championship game was on the line. With under two minutes left in regulation, with the game tied at 11, Erramouspe earned a free-position opportunity and converted when she bounced it into the back of the net on the far pipe. That would be enough for Riverton to punch its ticket to the championship game.

“It feels full circle for me,” said Riverton Head Coach Hannah Kelleher, who played at Westminster. “It’s great to be back and a little bittersweet as I miss playing.”

Maggie Bird had 4 goals and an assist to lead Riverton.

No. 1 Skyridge will take on No. 2 Riverton at 10:00am on Thursday at Zions Bank Stadium.

Boys Quarterfinal Recap

It was another great round of the playoffs! Here’s what happened.

No. 1 Corner Canyon v. No. 8 Westlake - Ron Hill from Hill & Hill Photography was on hand to capture the action in Draper.

Westlake knew they had to bring their very best game and hoped for the reigning state champions to be off their game a bit. Unfortunately, none of that happened. Westlake had trouble finding consistency in their offensive game and the defense couldn’t stop the Chargers, who are on a mission for another state title.

Kampton Dutton began things for the Chargers in the first minute by getting a nice shot by Westlake’s Goalie Ethan Rasmusen. That was followed by 11 consecutive goals scored by Corner Canyon in just the first half. They set the tone by scoring the first four goals of the game within the first three minutes of play. Jacob Keys and Pierson DeGracie led the way, with DeGracie scoring his first of six goals on the evening. Add in teammates Ashton Brown, Cameron Crayk, and Ren Neilson who all contributed to the first half scoring barrage by the Chargers.

It wasn’t until four minutes left in the second quarter that the Thunder offensive players, Rufus Christiansen and Lincoln Foess each found the back of the net to save a first-half shutout. Westlake had a long and tough road in front of them, but the Thunder did go into the half with a little more pep in their step after the two quick goals to close the second quarter. However, even with the two late half scores the Chargers still controlled the game with a strong 13-2 lead.

The second half was pretty much the same. With Corner Canyon keeping up a resilient defense and the offense adding another nine goals on to the board with their usual suspects and some help from some of the underclassmen late in the game. Westlake never laid down in this game, the Chargers were playing at another level, but the Thunder stayed competitive throughout the second half. They were also able to get a few more points on the board before the end of the game.

With a final victory of 22-5, Corner Canyon takes a lot of confidence to Dumke Field for the semifinals and their continued quest for their seventh state championship. The last time Corner Canyon wasn’t in the semis was in 2017 which is the only time in its 12-year history that the Chargers haven’t made it to at least the semis.

“Overall, I was pleased,” said Corner Canyon Head Coach Jeff King. “The defense played well and offensively, we moved the ball. We had some great unselfish play on offense.”

No. 2 Skyridge v. No. 10 Herriman - It was a close game as both squads settled into the game. Skyridge led 6-4 at halftime and went on to win, 11-8.

Dylan Forsgren had 4 goals, Dominic Weaver had 1 goal and 2 assists, Cabell Buechner finished with 3 assists and Tamanuitoi Johnson had 2 goals for the Falcons. Renner Farrer had 3 ground balls and 4 takeaways while Eric Parry had 5 ground balls and 3 takeaways. Boston Strickland went 11 of 17 from the faceoff dot. Luke Adams had 7 saves.

Patrick Sanger caught up with Coach Butterfield and Beuchner after the game.

No. 3 Farmington v. No. 6 Weber - The Phoenix advanced to the semifinals by beating Weber, 10-5. This is the third time Farmington has made the semifinals.

Farmington opened the scoring at the 10:12 mark when Brock Milne found the back of the net. Weber responded a minute later with Kage Panter on an assist from Garrett Bachison. Late in the quarter, Milne scored again on an assist by Levi Ashby to retake the lead. Weber once again answered on a goal by Jake Greenhalgh with a second assist from Bachison. The Phoenix answered with 14 seconds left when Wyatt Salmon found the back of the net on an assist from Kai Beynon.

The second quarter was just as close when freshman defenseman Kaleb Romero took it the distance and scored for the Warriors, tying the game on a fast break at the 10:05 mark. Salmon would score next for Farmington when he took the ball from X and got past his man then shot low to the back side and found twine. Just over two minutes later, Farmington defenseman Austin Briggs stripped a Weber player then found Ryder Hill who found Cole Smith for the fast break goal, giving Farmington a 5-3 lead going into halftime.

The Farmington defense continued to play well as it knocked down passes, knocked balls loose and even blocked shots. Farmington scored at the 11:14 mark when Beynon scored on a man-up play, assisted by Milne. Just over 8 minutes later, Beynon found Milne who scored a low to high top left corner man-up goal to extend the Phoenix lead to 4.

The fourth quarter was more of the same with Farmington controlling the game. Ashby had two goals in the fourth and Milne had the other. Weber didn’t give up and never surrendered, scoring two goals within 9 seconds at the 5:43 and 5:34 marks by Greenhalgh and Cooper Johnston.

Milne finished with 4 goals and 1 assist for Farmington. Kai Beynon had 1 goal and 3 assists. Austin Briggs had 8 ground balls and 6 takeaways for the Phoenix while fellow pole Dax Quist finished with 4 ground balls and 5 takeaways. Farmington goalie Brandon Barris had 12 saves. For Weber, Lance Keller won 16 of 19 faceoffs.

No. 4 Mountain Ridge v. No. 5 Bingham - Cody Elmen made his way to Herriman to provide a recap of the game.

Mountain Ridge and Bingham added another chapter to their rivalry on Saturday. Usually, these match-ups are slow, physical, and low-scoring affairs, as evidenced by their earlier this season matchup, where Mountain Ridge came back from an 8-3 deficit to stun Bingham 9-8. Today was the opposite as both offenses dominated, nearly doubling the goal total from the previous game.

Mountain Ridge would strike first off an inside roll from JT Rigby. JT would get another great look on a fast break, but TJ Edman stood tall for the save, leading to Bingham’s first possession of the game, which found paydirt as Krew Smith found space down the alley to tie the game at 1. The Sentinels would answer on the next possession with freshman Sam Foster sweeping to the middle to score. Bingham’s offense would answer back on man-up as a wheel play led to Parker Young scoring on a wrap from X, assisted by Ethan Alldredge. Bingham would have a good opportunity to take their first lead of the game, but Parker Guymon would turn the Miners away, leading to another Foster goal on the other end. However, Bingham would bounce back as Luke Whitney would score from distance to tie the game once more. Bingham had several chances to take the lead at the end of the quarter, but Guymon’s big saves would keep the game tied at 3 at the end of the first.

Mountain Ridge would push their lead up to two by taking advantage of a couple of Bingham turnovers. Trace Hook wrapped from X to score, then Rigby drew the attention of the defense and fired a skip pass to Bradley Foster as he wrapped from X to score. Alldredge would cut the lead to one on a wrap-around goal, but Mountain Ridge kept the pressure on as Rigby would score again after causing a turnover on the ride. Mountain Ridge would win the next faceoff, and JT completed his first-half hat trick following a face-dodge on the fast break. However, Bingham had a golden opportunity after a scrum on the faceoff left Mountain Ridge two men down, with one of the penalties being non-releasable. Bingham would convert the first extra-man opportunity with Stratton Anderson scoring on a Krew Smith assist. Rigby, with a long stick, took the next faceoff for Mountain Ridge and won. However, he was immediately double-teamed by Jackson Williamson and Nixon Winzeler, leading to a turnover, fast break, and Anderson feeding Parker Young to cut the Sentinel lead to one. Bingham would have another opportunity to tie the game, but Guymon snuffed it out, and Bingham would be caught offside on the clear. Mountain Ridge converted their man-up opportunity as Hook found fellow attackman, Titan McMurtrey. Rigby would take advantage of another Miner turnover as he ran through the slide to score once again. Bingham remained undeterred as they would convert on another man-up by reversing their usual play, leading to Alldredge scoring once again. The teams would head into halftime with the score 9-7 for Mountain Ridge, a stark contrast to their meeting earlier this season, which ended 9-8 for the Sentinels.

At halftime, both teams would look for answers on defense, but both came up empty-handed. LeRoy Gillette would win the opening faceoff. Mountain Ridge has adapted to so many teams trying to lock off JT, as JT would start the faceoff on the wing with his long pole, sub off, sub back on through the midline with his short stick, then initiate the offense. In this case, it led to another goal as Rigby would find Bradley Foster again. The Sentinels increased their lead off another turnover as Trace Hook caught a pass, hitched, faked a pass to the crease, then fired a bouncer to the top of the goal off a feed from Gavin Gurr. Bingham answered back with a three-goal run of their own. Parker Young tried a backhanded shot on Guymon, who saved. Bingham would force a turnover on the clear, and Young converted his second chance. Williamson would win the next faceoff, leading to a Krew Smith goal. Brighton Bird took the next faceoff, winning back to his LSM Cash Moon. Moon found SSDM Joey Larson, who passed back to Bird for a beautiful fast break goal, and Mountain Ridge’s lead was cut to one, once again. Mountain Ridge would have four good looks at goal turned away by Edman, but kept the ball, leading to another man-up opportunity. However, Nixon Winzeler would end the opportunity before it began with an excellent can-opener check, giving Bingham the ball with a chance to tie. However, it would come to nothing as Bingham turned the ball over, was caught offside on the ride, and Mountain Ridge would convert on the man-up. Bingham’s defense had been locking off JT on all man-up opportunities, so Mountain Ridge left JT to recover on the sideline, which allowed them to run their normal man-up offense, where Gavin Gurr converted off an assist from McMurtrey to give the Sentinels a two-goal lead once again. Tyler Rominger would force a turnover on a trail-check leading to a goal as Sam Foster found Hook camping on the crease to score with 30 seconds left. Mountain Ridge was not content with a three-goal lead as Colin Weller won the faceoff and found JT Rigby with time and room. JT would miss, but Hook had the backup. With little time remaining, Hook fired a pass to the crease where Hazen White would get a quick-stick shot off to beat the buzzer and extend their lead to 4 going into the final quarter with the score at 14-10.

Both teams knew that a four-goal lead in the fourth quarter may not be enough, as Mountain Ridge scored four in the fourth quarter of the previous match-up to steal the win from the Miners. Bingham would look to do the same here. However, Sam Foster would cap his fantastic performance with a perfectly executed bounce pass through the defense to Gavin Gurr, who scored to push the lead to 5. Bingham tried to get the comeback started as Evan MacKay scored off an assist from Champ Carlson. Bird would win the next faceoff for the Miners, leading to a shot by Moon, only for it to be saved by Guymon. Rigby would hit the dagger off an assist from Gurr for his fifth goal of the game to give Mountain Ridge their 16th and final goal. Bingham kept fighting as Carlson scored. However, LeRoy Gillette won the following faceoff, allowing the Sentinels to kill several minutes of clock as JT Rigby fought through a tough defense. Bingham would eventually force a turnover, and Anderson scored one final time for the Miners, resulting in the final score of 16-13 for Mountain Ridge.

While Bingham’s offense was humming most of the game, they missed several opportunities to tie the game or take the lead as turnovers, particularly unforced turnovers, in key situations allowed the Sentinels to extend their lead at key moments. While this loss is disappointing, this season has been excellent for the Miners.

For Mountain Ridge, their clears were highly effective against a team that takes great pride in their rides. They were organized, crisp, and in the right places at all times. Their ability to adapt to what the defense threw at them made them almost impossible to stop in this game. Bingham had not allowed a team to score more than 9 against them this season, the Sentinels nearly doubled that total with an outstanding performance from all their key contributors. Rigby, Gurr, Hook, McMurtrey, and both Fosters scored multiple goals at key moments.

5A

No. 1 Park City v. No. 8 Olympus - The Miners continued to show why they are the No. 1 team with another defensive masterclass in a 12-5 win over Olympus. The score was tied at 3 at the end of the first quarter but the Miners only allowed two more goals the rest of the game.

Henry Alnwick had 3 goals and 4 assists for the Miners. Wade Birch had 4 assists. Hunter Hutchison and Wyatt Knapp had 2 goals. Matix Black, Reid McCurdy, Crew Kimble, Wyatt Williamson and Samuel Gould also tallied a goal for Park City. Harper Brent and Benjamin Gibbs had 3 takeaways on the defensive end. Goalie Max Gordon had 9 saves.

“Everything clicked for us today,” said Park City Head Coach Mike Persky. “The defense was stifling once they settled down. The offense was patient and unselfish. It was a great team game. Olympus is always strong and well coached. We are happy to have them behind us.”

This marks the fifth-straight season that the Miners ended the Titans postseason. Park City beat Olympus in the 2022 and 2023 5A Championship games, 2024 and 2025 5A Semifinals and now the 2026 5A Quarterfinals.

No. 2 Brighton v. No. 7 Judge - Brighton beat the Bulldogs on Saturday, 11-9, to advance to the semifinals for the fourth straight year.

Judge came out and built up a 4 goal lead midway through the first quarter on a goal by Sean Jerome, two by Maddox Comey and one from Freddy Gowski. Burton Klc would pull one back for the Bengals with just over a minute left.

Both teams exchanged goals in the first part of the second quarter but then the Bengals scored 5 straight to take a 7-5 lead into halftime. The run began with a goal by Zac Anderson on a fast break step down, then Declan Carrera had a fast break pole goal. Zac Anderson tied the game on a give-and-go with Cole Murray. Sebastian Ramirez won the ensuing faceoff and found Murray on the wing who scored. Gabe Carrera finished the run with an iso effort from X off a restart.

The Bulldogs owned the third quarter, scoring 4 goals and allowed zero. Comey, Dallas Mattena, Jerome and Gus Wood all had goals for the visitors. The fourth quarter was just the opposite as Brighton scored 4 goals and allowed zero. Anderson, Owen Hansen, Murray and Nicholas Francone scored for the Bengals.

Anderson, Murray, Klc and Gabe Carrera all finished with 3 points for Brighton. Nash Hales had 4 takeaways for the Bengals. Fellow pole, Ryder Linford, was up and down the field all day and had 3 takeaways. Landon Stosich finished with 9 saves.

No. 3 Alta v. No. 11 Box Elder - It was a dominant effort from the Hawks who won the game comfortably, 19-11.

The Hawks jumped out to a 9-4 lead at halftime then poured it on with an 8 goal third quarter to cruise to the semifinals.

Beckham Horoba led the way with 3 goals and 7 assists. JJ Massi had 6 goals and 2 assists. Colby Blackham had 3 goals and 3 assists. Jace Brown had 4 goals and 1 assist.

Spencer Parry was a force on the defensive end notching 6 ground balls and 6 takeaways.

No. 4 Wasatch v. No. 12 East - East did the unthinkable and pulled off a 11-10 upset win in overtime.

When I saw this score come through, I texted East Head Coach Charlie Freedman and said, “Hey Charlie it’s Tim Haslam - will you call me when you get a minute?” He called me back shortly and I could barely hear what he was saying because of the ruckus that was in the background. What I could hear was the joy in his voice though and I can tell Freedman loves this team.

Wasatch jumped out to a 3-0 lead on two goals from Sam King and one from Randy Horner. Parker Tate scored for East to make the score 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.

East scored first in the second quarter on a goal by Cade Black then both teams scored three goals in the quarter to make the halftime score 6-5 for the Wasps.

East tied the game when Jackson Milner-Barraza found the back of the net at the 7:46 mark in the third quarter. Wasatch reeled off two goals which was answered by the Leopards. Both teams scored again in the quarter to tie the game at 8.

You could sense this game would come down to the wire and it did just that. In the fourth, both teams tightened the reins. East took the lead midway through the quarter but Kash Russell scored with 38 seconds left for the Wasps.

In overtime, Reilly Pearson-Ortolani assisted his brother Bailey for the game-winning goal for the Leopards.

East did a good job slowing down the Wasatch faceoff crew. The Leopards won 11 of 25 faceoffs.

No. 1 Juan Diego v. No. 8 Mountain Crest - The Soaring Eagle soared to the semis with an 11-2 win over Mountain Crest. Noah Schuyler had 3 goals and 3 assists. Jack Stoback and Parker Stolz finished with 3 goals each. Kai Fairbanks had 6 takeaways for Juan Diego. Cooper Pecora went 15 of 17 from the faceoff dot.

No. 2 Waterford v. No. 7 Ridgeline - Waterford started strong and never looked back en route to a 12-5 win over Ridgeline.

Kellen Kemper led the Ravens with 2 goals and 4 assists. Noah Chao had 3 goals and 2 assists. Pierce Hauber had 3 goals. Luke Hunter had 7 ground balls and 3 takeaways for Waterford.

No. 3 Bear River v. No. 6 Timpanogos - The Bears advanced to the semis for the second straight year after beating Timpanogos, 14-10.

Timpanogos led 4-3 after the first quarter but strong second and third quarters were the difference in this one.

Preston Wilkinson had 4 goals and 2 assists to lead the Bears. Linkoln White had 1 goal and 5 assists. Waylon Loveland had 3 goals and an assist. Emmett Christensen was a grizzly all over the field scooping up 8 ground balls and earning 5 takeaways. Daxton Chairez had 10 saves.

No. 4 Green Canyon v. No. 5 Sky View - Max Brunson scored the game-winning goal in a 10-9 overtime win to send the Wolves to the semis.

Sky View took an early 4-2 lead but Green Canyon fought back to tie the game at 6 heading into the fourth quarter. The Wolves scored first in the fourth but Sky View answered with two goals to reclaim the lead. Green Canyon then scored two and took the driver’s seat but the Bobcats fought back and tied the game which ended the game in a 9-9 tie.

In overtime, Brunson dodged to his right, spun back and then shot low to low which found the back of the net and secured the victory.

Bennett Steed had 5 goals for the Wolves. Brunson finished with 3 goals and 2 assists. Eli Wheatley and Sawyer Rainey combined to win 19 of 23 faceoffs for Green Canyon. Jensen Storrs finished with 13 saves.

Boys Semis Preview

No. 1 Corner Canyon v. No. 4 Mountain Ridge

These two squads met on March 24 which saw Corner Canyon win, 23-11, which was the only 6A loss that the Sentinels had this season. Corner Canyon is looking to get to its sixth straight championship game. The Chargers enter the game with an all-time record in the playoffs of 35-5. The last time Corner Canyon lost a playoff game was in 2019. For Mountain Ridge, the chance to play in its first championship since it became a program is at stake.

No. 2 Skyridge v. No. 3 Farmington

On paper, this is the textbook definition of what should be a great matchup. Both teams are averaging 15.1 goals per game but the Farmington defense has allowed 19 goals less overall. Both teams beat Riverton and American Fork, but both lost to Corner Canyon. Both teams have 4 offensive players with 60 or more points. Both teams have played a dual-goalie system because they have two great senior goalies. The only difference I can see on paper is that the Skyridge faceoff unit won 62% of faceoffs taken where Farmington sits at 53%. I think the difference will come down to which defensive unit plays best because as we all know, defense wins championships.

No. 1 Park City v. No. 12 East

In the regular season, Park City beat the Leopards, 14-6 on April 1. However, I think East has put the regular season in the rearview mirror. East is averaging 13.4 goals per game compared to 11.3 for the Miners. The big factor in this one though will be the Park City defense which is allowing 4.6 goals per game. If you remove out of state competition from the Miners schedule, they are giving up just 3.25 goals per game. The in-state team that scored the most on Park City? East. A Park City win would see the Miners in its 8th straight championship game. A win for East would be its second championship game. The first was an 8-3 win over Spanish Fork in the 2019 Class C championship game.

No. 2 Brighton v. No. 3 Alta

Nothing like a playoff rivalry game! Alta won the regular season game on April 15. That game was tied at 13 heading into the fourth quarter. Alta scored one goal and allowed 0 to take home the win. Alta is scoring 13.1 goals per game compared to 13.2 for Brighton. The Brighton defense is giving up 7 goals per game compared to 8.4 for Alta. The Bengals would love to compete for a three-peat which has only been done by Corner Canyon. For Alta, a championship game hasn’t seen the Hawks since the 2021 Class B championship which Alta won, 12-4, over Westlake.

No. 1 Juan Diego v. No. 4 Green Canyon
Both teams enter the semis with similar records (15-4 for JD, 16-4 for GC), similar goals per game (11.9 for JD, 12.9 for GC) and goals against average (8.0 for JD, 7.4 for GC). If you look beyond the numbers, both teams are loaded with talent who want to get to the championship game. Juan Diego is looking to get back into the title game after falling to Judge last year. The Green Canyon seniors were freshman when the Wolves won the 2023 4A State Championship.

No. 2 Waterford v. No. 3 Bear River

The Bears won the regular season matchup, 11-8, on April 3. I suspect we’ll see another close game as both teams are vying for a chance at a championship. Waterford is averaging 12.2 goals per game compared to Bear River’s 13.5. Waterford hasn’t made it to the semifinals since 2019. Bear River was in the 2025 4A Semifinals but lost to Judge, 13-3.

Girls Quarterfinal Recap/Semifinal Preview

No. 2 Riverton is one step closer to the championship after defeating No. 7 Davis, 14-1. Senior Paisley Young had an amazing game with five points and a .883% shot on goal rate. Right behind her was freshman Cara Erramouspe with four goals and a .667 shot rate. These two amazing shooters will now lead the team as they take on No. 3 Mountain Ridge on Tuesday at Dumke Field. The Sentinels have had a great season and may be looking for revenge after losing to Riverton in the regular season.

The Sentinels punched their ticket to the 6A Semifinals with a commanding 17-6 quarterfinal victory over the No. 6 Syracuse Titans in a true game of two halves.

The showdown ignited just over a minute into play when Syracuse senior Adrie Fairbanks found the back of the net, marking the first of her impressive five goals on the afternoon. Mountain Ridge answered quickly, countering with a three-goal barrage from Kaitlyn Selway, Tia Anderson, and Lucy Rigby. While the Sentinels extended their lead in the second quarter thanks to a four-goal surge—including scoring contributions from Bentlee McMurtrey—Fairbanks single-handedly kept the Titans within striking distance. She netted two late goals before the whistle, sending Syracuse into halftime trailing just 7-4.

Any hopes of a Titan comeback vanished after the break as Mountain Ridge’s explosive offense completely took control, unleashing a devastating 10-0 run. Claire Pomeroy, Ryann Finch, and Brooklyn Chapo all added their names to the scorebook, fueled by crisp orchestration from teammates Rigby, Anderson, Selway, and McMurtrey. Though Syracuse fought to the final whistle, capitalizing on late goals by Nora Gull and Fairbanks to cap off a successful Titan season, Mountain Ridge cruised to the finish line.

The Sentinels’ offensive masterclass featured an incredible three hat tricks from Selway, Anderson, and McMurtrey, alongside a spectacular five-goal performance by Rigby.

In the upset of the day, No. 4 Lone Peak took down No. 5 Farmington by a single point, 11-10. Senior Norah Lisonbee and the rest of the Knights will now face No. 1 Skyridge. The Falcons easily won their game against No. 8 Herriman on Saturday, 18-3. This is a tough team and will be looking to take down Lone Peak when they meet on Tuesday.

Could Olympus and Park City be heading for another championship rematch? It appears to be shaping up that way.

The No. 1 Miners took down No. 9 Payson, 18-1, in what could only be called a rout. Senior Miley Miller scored the only point for the Lions, while on the Park City side, sophomores Natalia Szwajkun and Stella Mondschein both had five points apiece.

Park City will now play No. 5 Salem Hills, who earned their spot in the semi-finals defeating No. 4 Brighton 13-6. The Skyhawks came out of the gate strong, scoring nine of their points in the first half, and only allowing the Bengals to score one point in the second half. The junior trio of Ruby Lindstrom, Rachel Turner, and Maddie Gailey each scored three for Salem HIlls, and Lindstrom picked up an amazing 12 ground balls during the game.

No. 6 Olympus has been battling all season, and the battles have paid off as it beat No. 3 West Jordan, 12-9. The Titan junior trio of Elle Hale, Amberly Boyce, and Amelia Bell each had three points, and goalie Halle Peterson played the whole game with a save rate of 55%.

The Titans will now face No. 2 Fremont, who are coming to Tuesday’s game after defeating the No. 7 Clearfield Falcons, 11-5. The Wolves started strong with eight goals in the first half, and while they took their foot off the gas in the second, allowing Clearfield to score four, they stayed just sharp enough to take the win. Fremont will need to stay sharp if they want to go to the finals. Olympus is tasting victory again, and it is not something they are going to let sour.

4A

Top-seeded Bear River absolutely dismantled No. 9 Ridgeline, 21-2. The Bears’ high-octane offense was unstoppable, led by sophomore Mollie Call with six points, sophomore Jeanine Webb with five and senior Broolyn Briel with five. The Riverhawks two goals were scored by junior Dayanna Fairbanks and junior Eme Welker.

Next up for the powerhouse Bears is No. 5 Timpanogos. The Timberwolves punched their ticket to the semifinals by grinding out a tough 9-6 road upset over No. 4 Hurricane. Timpanogos relied on a lockdown defensive performance to choke out the Tigers’ attack in the second half, and they’ll need every bit of that defensive grit on Tuesday if they hope to slow down Bear River’s relentless scoring machine.

On the other half of the bracket, No. 3 Judge Memorial survived an absolute thriller against No. 6 Green Canyon. In a back-and-forth heavyweight battle, the Bulldogs showed veteran composure in the final minutes to hold off a furious Wolves rally and escape with a gritty 11-10 victory.

They’ll face a massive test on Tuesday against No. 2 Provo, who looked utterly dominant in an 18-3 routing of No. 10 Canyon View. Seniors Anna Jaussi and Emma Parke helped the the Bulldogs jump out to a massive early lead and never looked back, cruising comfortably into the final four. Provo has looked like a true title contender all season long, but Judge Memorial has a knack for winning close games and won’t back down easily.

No. 1 Corner Canyon defeated No. 16 Cedar Valley, 27-3.

Ashton Brown led the way for the Chargers who had 6 goals and 3 assists. Pierson DeGracie finished with 4 goals and 3 assists. Corner Canyon had 13 players score at least one goal. Tanner Adamson finished with 5 takeaways. Jace Weaver had 21 saves for the Aviators.

No. 2 Skyridge advanced to the Quarterfinals after beating No. 15 Copper Hills, 17-2.

No. 3 Farmington beat No. 14 American Fork, 16-5.

“We feel like the boys played great tonight,” said Farmington Head Coach Scott Beynon. “They looked like they were having fun! We have a tough game Saturday against Weber, who is playing great right now. They have a great group of kids and we are looking forward to playing them again.”

No. 4 Mountain Ridge defeated No. 13 Syracuse, 18-7.

The Sentinels were led by JT Rigby who had 6 goals and 7 assists. Gavin Gurr had 6 goals and 2 assists while Trace Hook had 5 goals. Mountain Ridge had a 4-2 lead after the first quarter then stomped on the gas and outscored the Titans 14-5 the rest of the game.

“It was a great game to start the playoffs,” said Mountain Ridge Head Coach Justin Rigby. “We played good defense, turning it into transition goals. Our attack led the way. Overall, the chemistry and attitude of this team has been special and we are excited to continue toward the next game playing together.”

No. 5 Bingham v. No. 12 Lehi - Recap by Cody Elmen

Bingham built a big lead in the first half and used that hot start to outlast the upset-minded Lehi Pioneers, 13-9. Bingham’s rides and ability to win loose balls allowed them to dominate time of possession, which led to Bingham leading 12-4 going into the fourth quarter. Lehi would battle back with a five-goal quarter before Bingham ran out the clock, advancing to the next round of the 6A Boys Lacrosse Championship.

Bingham’s offense came out swinging with a five-goal run to start the game. Krew Smith beat his defender out of the substitution box and found Parker Young wide open on the crease to open the scoring. Luke Whitney fired from distance against Lehi’s zone defense to extend the Miners’ lead. Lehi tried to answer back with their own ten-man ride, but a quick restart after a missed shot from midfield left Champ Carlson open in the middle, making it 3-0 Bingham. Bingham’s ride stifled the Pioneers, and Stratton Anderson capitalized, causing a turnover and firing a perfect no-look pass to Ethan Alldredge on the crease, who easily scored what was likely the play of the day. Young doubled his total for the day, bouncing off multiple defenders, and scored to cap the Miners’ run. Lehi remained undeterred despite the early deficit, as Colton Kenison found Reed Neilsen on a Pioneer power play to put them on the board. Lehi kept pushing to chip away at Bingham’s lead as Brennen Frazier got a good look at goal, but his bouncer was saved by TJ Edman, who outlet quickly, leading to a fast-break goal from Bingham by Alldredge, with the assist from Young.

Lehi kept the pressure high and refused to back down. Nielsen made a fantastic individual effort on a clear, setting up possession for the Pioneers with little time remaining in the first quarter. A great wing dodge by Stockton Dorton forced the defense to slide, and Jackson Rich would wrap from X, scoring with only five seconds left in the quarter. Connor Delphenich would win the following faceoff for Lehi and draw a penalty, giving the Pioneers the ball and an extra-man opportunity to start the second quarter. Lehi would take advantage of the opportunity as Delphenich found Dorton on a skip pass, and Dorton would score once again for Lehi, cutting Bingham’s advantage in half at 6-3.

Sensing a shift in momentum, Bingham’s offense came alive again with another 4-goal run. Faceoff specialist Jackson Williamson won the next two faceoffs for Bingham, and Bingham scored on both opportunities, with goals from Charlie Wahlquist and Krew Smith. Both teams struggled to clear the ball, and just when another failed clear looked likely, Region 2’s Defensive MVP Judson DuPaix split a triple team to keep momentum on Bingham’s side. Bingham’s offense took advantage as Wahlquist found Carlson for his second goal of the day. Alldredge returned the favor to Anderson, and the senior attack duo scored again to push Bingham’s lead to 10-3 at the half.

The second half could have started with a big shift in momentum when a fast break led to a 1-on-1 between Mason Heightman and TJ Edman. Edman shut down the fast break attempt, leading to a Miners’ goal by Anderson on the other end. On the following faceoff, Lehi had another fast break opportunity snuffed out as Edman stood tall once again. Lehi would have two more fast-break opportunities in the third quarter, but they were stopped by Edman and by a risky slide by DuPaix, which paid off with a turnover. Lehi’s defense refused to be outdone and forced the Miners into turnovers on several possessions in a row, with big saves by Isaac VanCott. Following another Bingham turnover, Nielsen would take it coast to coast to start Lehi’s quest to chip away at Bingham’s lead. However, Luke Whitney would score once again with five seconds left in the third quarter to give Bingham a commanding 12-4 lead going into the final period.

Lehi refused to give up. Colton Kenison would intercept a Bingham pass, leading to a goal for Stockton Dorton, with an assist from Jackson Rich. Lehi would have multiple great opportunities slip through their fingers, as a scrum in front of the goal would just miss wide, a shot from Neilsen forced a tough save by Edman, and a man-up chance would hit the post. Lehi’s excellent defense was beaten by even better offense from Krew Smith, as a lightning-quick wraparound shot from X would extend Bingham’s lead once again. However, Lehi refused to give up. A caused turnover by Jax McWhorter would lead to a Bingham penalty, and this time Lehi would capitalize with a goal by Kenison from Neilsen. Delphenich would win the next three faceoffs, leading to goals for the Pioneers. Dorton made a very contested catch on a feed from Frazier to score once again for Lehi. Rich would force a turnover in front of the goal to score an impressive Canadian-style goal. Nielsen would find Rich once again to finish on the crease to cap Lehi’s 5-goal fourth quarter. However, their comeback would fall short as Bingham would win the following faceoff and run out the clock, winning 13-9.

Lehi’s effort and tenacity were obvious to all in attendance. When their offense could set up, they were highly effective. With a little more time and without TJ Edman making some key saves, this could have been a nail-biter. Bingham’s rides were very effective, and their dominance in the ground ball game gave them a large share of time of possession, especially in the first half. Bingham’s offense looked unstoppable at times, but they have run into slow stretches that have cost them games this season. If they can put a whole game together, they will be tough to beat the rest of the tournament, especially with how tough their defense is. The Miners have not allowed an opponent to score more than 9 goals this season.

No. 6 Weber took care of business against No. 11 Lone Peak, winning 14-8.

Kage Panter had 7 points for the Warriors. Briggs Whitworth notched 3 goals and an assist. Lance Keller went 91% from the faceoff X for Weber.

“The boys played high level lacrosse tonight and moved the ball extremely well,” said Weber Head Coach Randy Allred. “They played poised and under control on both sides of the field. Couldn’t be more proud of the grit and effort these boys play with.”

No. 10 Herriman upset No. 7 Riverton, 12-9.

Both teams fought off nerves to begin the game but eventually found their stride with each team scoring 3 goals in the first quarter. Herriman did a nice job controlling the game after that, leading to a 12-9 win.

Griffin Casteel was the man for the Mustangs scoring 5 goals. Dax Sorensen had 3 goals for Herriman.

No. 8 Westlake earned a hard-fought victory over No. 9 Davis, 11-5.

No. 1 Park City shut out No. 16 Northridge, 18-0.

No. 2 Brighton defeated No. 18 Skyline, 17-5.

The Bengals jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter with goals by Gabe Carrera, Burton Klc, Ian Welker and Zac Anderson. Skyline pulled one back at the end of the quarter. The scoreline was the same in the second and third quarters. Brighton finished the game with 5 goals and allowed two, making the final score 17-5. Carrera finished with 3 goals and 5 assists. Dylan Despain had 2 goals and 3 assists.

“The boys played well,” said Brighton Head Coach Chris O’Donnell. “It was a slow start but our key contributors took over when necessary and got us going. Region opponents can always be tricky but thought we handled it well. We’re looking forward to hosting a great opponent in Judge on Saturday.”

No. 3 Alta beat No. 14 Spanish Fork, 16-6.

No. 4 Wasatch took care of business against No. 13 Payson, winning 14-3.

Sam King notched 5 goals for the Wasps. Randy Horner had 4 points while Ty Griffith and Isaac Roylance both had 2 goals and an assist.

“We dominated faceoffs and time of possession the entire game, but in the first half despite generating a lot of good looks we weren’t burying the shots,” said Wasatch Head Coach Kevin Wallace. “That paired with Payson being optimistic and scoring a couple transition goals gave us only a 4-3 lead at half. The boys kept their composure and stuck with the game plan and in the second half we started hitting shots and dominated 10-0 in scoring. Sam King was our standout player hitting a lot of big shots to get us going. We’re excited to move on to the quarterfinals.”

No. 12 East upset No. 5 Bountiful, 16-13 - Ron Hill from Hill & Hill Photography was on hand to catch the action.

The East Leopards and the Bountiful Redhawks faced off in the second round of the 5A state playoffs. East was coming off a convincing victory over Viewmont in the first round on Tuesday and Top 10 ranked Bountiful were getting some rest and waiting on their first playoff opponent, setting up a classic high school playoff game.

Bountiful opened the game strong and built some comfortable leads and East leveraged an incredible fourth quarter which secured them a spot in Saturday’s Quarterfinals.

Visiting East began the scoring with a quick goal by Bailey Pearson-Ortolani just 45 seconds into the first quarter. Bountiful responded by putting six goals into the back of the net themselves throughout the quarter. Theo Holt added two scores, while Dawson Allsop and Madden Rieck added their own scores.

As it seemed the Redhawks had control of the game, the Leopards Oscar Keegan, Will Pearson-Ortolani and Cade Black were able to mix in some good shots to keep the East in the game at 4-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The second saw the same as the first as Bountiful seemed to hold much of the possession time but East was not going to let the Redhawks take complete control of the game. Bountiful’s Holt and Rieck put three quick scores on the board before East’s Bailey Pearson-Ortolani got the Leopards on the scoreboard themselves with a little over four minutes remaining. Bountiful’s Allsop doubled up the Redhawks lead at 10-5 with a nice score off a faceoff. But the Leopards held their resiliency and snuck in a couple of goals right before the halftime break, making the score 10-7 in favor of Bountiful.

The third quarter turned defensive and very physical for both teams as Bountiful was only able to get two goals from Carter Terry in the quarter. The Leopards could only find the back of the net once in the quarter because of some excellent goalkeeping by the Redhawks Ivan Holt, who had 12 saves on the evening, as W. Pearson-Ortolani scored his third goal on the evening. Bountiful had built some momentum with a nice 12-8 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

That is where it ended for Bountiful as the fourth quarter was all East. How about eight unanswered goals by the Leopards, compared to only one goal by the Redhawks in the quarter. B. Pearson-Ortolani began the scoring barrage about a minute into the quarter. At that point teammates, Keegan, with six goals on the evening, Black, and Eli Brink all added to the scoring explosion to give East the surprising but well-earned comeback 16-13 victory and a trip to the quarterfinals on Saturday.

No. 11 Box Elder upset No. 6 Timpview, 15-7.

Box Elder scored first and never looked back en route to a Second Round upset. Isaac Funk kicked off the scoring at the 7:54 mark for Box Elder. Aiden Dutson from Timpview tied the game two minutes later. Funk scored again to make the score 2-1 after the first quarter.

The Bees scored 5 goals in the second quarter and allowed just 1. Funk scored four of them with Josh Pugsley adding one. A 5-2 third quarter put the game out of reach as the Bees cruised to victory. Funk finished with 7 goals and 1 assist.

“The boys played great on both sides of the field,” said Box Elder Head Coach Tim Martin. “Our clears were working great and we got several fast break goals. Defense locked down their shooters. It was an awesome game to coach and watch.”

No. 7 Judge dominated No. 10 Pleasant Grove, 13-1.

The Bulldogs got out to an 8-0 lead late into the second quarter before the Vikings found the back of the net. Freddy Gowski had 3 goals and 2 assists. Jake Ortega had 4 caused turnovers for the Bulldogs.

“The boys played well,” said Judge Head Coach Jeff Brzoska. “We had 49 shots total for the game and kept the pressure on their D and Goalie all day. Defense was unbelievable again. I think we really have figured it out on both sides of the ball. Game balls went to Gowski and Ortega. Connor [Knight] was great in net as we went 22-22 in the clear and he made 7 saves.”

No. 8 Olympus edged No. 9 West Field, 9-5.

The first was a defensive battle with both goalies making great saves. The first goal of the game belonged to Olympus when Kai Rossi scored on the doorstep with 1:32 left in the first quarter. Drake Woolley would add a second goal with 20 seconds left.

The second quarter was more of the same with both defenses stepping up to the challenge. The lone goal of the quarter came with 25 seconds left when Kenny Olsen started with the ball up top, went left, then rolled back and was able to get his hands free to shoot a bottom left corner burner to put West Field on the board.

The third quarter brought more goals which made for an exciting second half. Olympus reeled off three goals over a 5 minute span to make the score 5-1. Olsen scored another for the Longhorns at the 5:25 mark. Olympus midfielder Chase Taylor found the back of the net with a great individual effort, spinning up top and driving through a couple defenders then placing a perfect bounce shot into the twine. West Field would pull one back when Cooper Horspool swept over the top then down the right alley and found the back of the net on a nice bounce shot.

West Field scored the first goal of the fourth quarter when Lincoln Miller hit the far pipe on an alley dodge. The ball hit both posts before falling in the goal to bring the game within two. Jacob Buxton answered on a right alley dodge then a bizarre goal for West Field rolled into the net on a loose ball scrum. Beynon would find the back of the net next for the Titans on a save that wasn’t controlled. Kai Rossi finished the scoring for the Titans and sending Olympus to the Quarterfinals.

No. 1 Juan Diego cruised to a 19-2 victory over No. 16 Canyon View.

No. 2 Waterford tamed the No. 15 Hurricane Tigers, 17-2.

Noah Chao led the way with 3 goals and 4 assists. Zander Petrovitch had 3 goals and Luke Hunter, the freshman LSM Region 10 Defensive Player of the Year, had 3 goals as well.

“Our boys did what we asked and executed at a high level,” said Waterford Head Coach Will Manny. “We continue to play with great pace and manage the game well. A major focus for us has been building trust between our players and coaches within the game plan and in-game situations week to week. We are still striving to put together a complete four-quarter performance, but we’re continuing to grow as a team. Looking forward to being back at home on Saturday.”

No. 3 Bear River beat No. 14 Crimson Cliffs, 15-3.

No. 4 Green Canyon took care of business against No. 13 Jordan, winning 10-2.

Hayden Reeder had 3 goals and 2 assists for Green Canyon. Jensen Storrs made 12 saves in the win for the Wolves.

No. 5 Sky View beat No. 12 Dixie, 19-3.

Nixon Bohm had 6 goals and 2 assists for the Bobcats. Stetson Summers had 4 goals while Zach Tempest notched 3 goals and an assist.

“We’ve been working towards this and we feel like we’re peaking at the right time,” said Sky View Head Coach Craig Mueller. “We’ve been in every game but we struggled to finish. We’ve had a lot of key injuries, a small roster, and at times we can have five Freshman playing on the field, so depth and experience has hurt us. Now we have some players back and the underclassmen have 17 games under their belt. It’s all coming together at the right time. You can’t write it any better. Sky View and Green Canyon in the next round. We feel we’re ready and look forward to the challenge.”

No. 6 Timpanogos sneaked past No. 11 Provo, 10-5.

Brooks Jensen had 3 goals while Tanner Hansen and Noah Torgersen notched 2 goals for the Timberwolves.

No. 7 Ridgeline used a strong first quarter to beat No. 10 Highland, 8-5.

The Riverhawks led 4-1 at the end of the first which proved to be the difference as the scoring remained even the rest of the game. Andrew Johnson led the way for Ridgeline with 4 goals. Colbie Hislop had 4 caused turnovers while Jayden Andersen won 14 of 16 faceoffs.

No. 8 Mountain Crest narrowly escaped defeat, winning 7-6 over No. 9 Snow Canyon.

Davis Cooper had 4 goals and TJ Brown had 2 goals and 2 assists to lead the Mustangs. Kylan Atkinson had 18 saves for Mountain Crest.

Boys Quarterfinal Preview

6A

No. 1 Corner Canyon v. No. 8 Westlake - These former region foes are well acquainted with each other but it will take a Thor-like effort for Westlake to pull off the upset. Corner Canyon is 10-0 against common opponents while Westlake is 4-5. Corner Canyon is led by Pierson DeGracie who has 86 points on the season. Brady Burkinshaw is leading the Thunder with 65 points.

No. 2 Skyridge v. No. 10 Herriman

The odds are in favor of the Falcons who seem to be firing on all cylinders at the right time. The experience of Cabell Beuchner and Dylan Forsgren will help Skyridge as they look to return to the Semifinals for the second time in school history. The youth of Herriman will look to flip the script led by sophomore Dax Sorensen. Don’t forget goalie freshman Jackson Joyce who made several great saves in the Mustangs win over Riverton.

No. 3 Farmington v. No. 6 Weber

This will be the third time these two Region 1 foes will play this season. Farmington won both matchups, 11-9 and 9-6. This game will come down to the faceoff X and which team’s defense can slow down the other. Both teams like to push transition and have found success on fast and slow breaks.

No. 4 Mountain Ridge v. No. 5 Bingham

This quarterfinal game will be a rematch of the April 28 contest, when Mountain Ridge rallied from an 8-3 deficit to beat the Miners, shutting them out in the second half and claiming the Region 2 Championship. JT Rigby and Trace Hook each scored four goals for the Sentinels, and Ethan Alldredge led Bingham with two goals and an assist. This one should be another great chapter in this rivalry.

5A

No. 1 Park City v. No. 8 Olympus

Park City and Olympus faced off on April 28 and the Miners won, 8-4. Park City isn’t scoring a crazy number of goals, but its defense isn’t allowing many either, which is a good sign for postseason success. Olympus will look to get out and run to get the Park City defense moving.

No. 2 Brighton v. No. 7 Judge

Brighton beat Judge in what feels like a lifetime ago, 13-11, on March 13. Brighton is scoring more goals per game and allowing less goals per game which bodes well for the Bengal faithful. Judge is on a three-game winning streak and has found its groove. Brighton has won its last 8 games.

No. 3 Alta v. No. 11 Box Elder

The Bees are riding high with an upset in the Second Round and will hope to carry that momentum to Sandy on Saturday. Both teams are scoring just under 13 goals per game. Alta will hope to slow down Isaac Funk while the Bees will look to contain the potent Alta offense including JJ Massi and Beckham Horoba.

No. 4 Wasatch v. No. 12 East

Both teams are 3-1 against common opponents and are scoring the same amount of goals per game. The Wasatch defense has allowed more than 100 goals less than the East defense. East can score in bunches and the Wasp defense is stout. Whoever wins that end of the field will punch its ticket to the semis.

No. 1 Juan Diego v. No. 8 Mountain Crest

Juan Diego won the regular-season matchup, 13-4, on March 23. The Mustangs will need to slow down the Soaring Eagle attack and win faceoffs. A win for Juan Diego would mean back-to-back trips to the semis.

No. 2 Waterford v. No. 7 Ridgeline

Waterford beat Ridgeline, 17-5, on April 13. I suspect the Ravens will employ the same game plan as that game and take home the win. Waterford has a vast history in the playoffs, but haven’t reached the semis since 2019 when it went to the Class C semis.

No. 3 Bear River v. No. 6 Timpanogos

The Bears have just two losses this year and both games were settled by one goal. Both teams love to score goals so the difference in this will be which defense plays best.

No. 4 Green Canyon v. No. 5 Sky View

All eyes in Cache Valley will be on this game as the rivals go to battle once again in the playoffs. Green Canyon beat Sky View in the 2022 and 2023 4A Championship games. The Wolves won both regular season matchups, 17-13 and 11-9. The numbers favor Green Canyon, but the Bobcats will throw those out the window. I suspect we’ll see a close game with a chance to play at Westminster on the line.

Girls Second Round Recap/Quarterfinal Preview

6A

It was what we expected as No. 1 Skyridge took down No. 16 Westlake. Next up, the Falcons will take on No. 8 Herriman, who took down No. 9 Copper Hills, 18-11. The Falcons and Mustangs squared off just a week ago with Skyridge winning, 15-6.

The Riverton sweep keeps on with their 18-point victory against No. 15 Cedar Valley. They will now face No. 7 at Davis on Saturday, and it is a clear David-and-Goliath situation. But Davis is a tough team, and last night came away with a win, playing No. 10 Weber, 13-7. Riverton beat the Darts, 17-7, just a week ago.

Lone Peak is making a big push this season! The No. 4 team took down No. 13 Bingham, 11-3. They will now go on to face the fearsome No. 5 Farmington Phoenix, who romped over the No. 12 Corner Canyon Chargers, 18-5. Lone Peak won the regular season matchup on April 17, 11-10. We suspect this will come down to the wire once again.

No. 3 Mountain Ridge was victorious over No. 14 American Fork 20-3. Lucy Rigby continues to be a powerhouse for the Sentinels, scoring an average of five points every match. We will see if she brings the heat on Saturday when they play No. 6 Syracuse Titans. Syracuse took down No. 11 Lehi, 11-5, and has a slightly better record than Mountain Ridge going into the quarterfinals, but Rigby and the team could pull it off.

5A

Let’s start with the expected: No. 1 Park City took down No. 16 Woods Cross, 20-1. There really is no stopping this team, especially when sophomore Natalia Szwajkun goes on the attack. They will now go on to face No. 9 Payson, who narrowly defeated No. 8 Pleasant Grove on Thursday, 12-10.

No. 3 West Jordan and No. 6 Olympus will now face off on Saturday after winning their respective games. Olympus triumphed over No. 11 Alta 16-4, and West Jordan defeated No. 14 Northridge, 12-7. The Titans are playing great lacrosse at the moment but the Jaguars have scored 103 more goals than Olympus. It should be a high-scoring affair to see who advances to the Semifinals.

In a challenging match, No. 4 Brighton took down No. 13 Wasatch, 10-6. While it looked like the Bengals would easily take the match at the half, leading 6-1, the Wasps came back in the third and fourth quarters to score five goals and make the Bengals work for their win. Brighton now goes on to face No. 5 Salem Hills, which took down No. 12 Hillcrest, 12-4. This is the game to watch on Saturday, as both the Bengals and the Skyhawks are fierce competitors and not willing to easily give up a game. Either team could come out on top.

The No. 2 Fremont Wolves all but shut out No. 15 West Field, allowing the Longhorns just one goal in the second half, and ending the match 18-1. They now go on to play No. 7 Clearfield, who earned its spot in the quarterfinals by narrowly taking down No. 10 Bonneville, 8-6.

4A

The bear in this division, No. 1 Bear River, easily dispatched No. 16 Snow Canyon in their first round of the playoffs. It would take a miracle not to see them in the finals. No. 9 Ridgeline had a good game last night, though taking down No. 8 Sky View, 13-10. While the game was close, the only score that mattered was the one at the final whistle. Bear River won both regular season matchups against Ridgeline, 20-2 and 19-3.

The No. 10 Canyon View Falcons defeated the No. 7 Highland Rams 14-12 in a game that was back and forth until the end. At the end of the first quarter, the game was tied 4 all. In the second and third, the Falcons put on a push, and going into the final quarter, they were up 13-9 due mostly to the scoring power of sophomore Ella Brown and junior Kellee Tanner. The Rams put up a fight in the end, coming within one point of the Falcons in the fourth, but in the end they couldn’t pull it off, due in part to the excellent net skills of Canyon View’s Junior goalie Tessa Bailey.

It was a great game for the Sugarhouse team as senior Olive Chastang finished her high school career with 5 points in a single match. Canyon View now goes to face off against No. 2 Provo on Saturday in the quarterfinals. And Provo better be ready, this is a tough team that is not afraid to scrap for a win. Oh, and they play with just one alternate.

No. 2 Provo could have what it takes to take down Canyon View after trouncing No. 15 Logan, 16-4. This was the expected turnout, but Provo can’t take anything for granted anymore moving forward, especially with the power Canyon View is bringing to the field.

No. 3 Judge Memorial took down No. 14 Orem with an impressive 19-point spread, 24-5. Senior Heidi Delpoyus kept the team running and will help them seek a trip to the semifinals when they face No. 6 Green Canyon on Saturday. The Wolves took down No. 11 Waterford, 11-9. The Ravens went into this game expecting a rematch with the Bulldogs after the region final, and it looked like it would happen after a 7-point surge in the second half, but ultimately Green Canyon reigned supreme.

In the southern part of the state, the No. 4 Hurricane Tigers, as expected, took down the No. 13 Desert Hills Thunder, 14-11. The Tigers will now take on the No. 5 Timpanogos Timberwolves, who defeated the Jordan Beetdiggers, 11-8.

Park City ran away with the 7/8 A Championship, beating Skyline 13-4. The Miners jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.

The Miners had several players score goals including Davis Hughes, Cole McCutcheon, Ford Kimble and Bode Mishurda. Goalie Mason Howlett led the defense alongside Colt Hays, Jackson Bledsoe and others.

“What a year for this group,” said Park City Head Coach Kyle Hartzell. “Coaching these boys was something I looked forward to every single week. This team is special. They are connected, selfless, and battle-tested from years of playing together. Tonight was the best lacrosse they played all season. The way they competed for each other, trusted one another, and played as a unit showed exactly who they are. Collectively, they are the best 7/8 lacrosse team in the state, and they proved it by becoming Utah State Champions.”

In the 7/8 B Championship, Pocatello beat Teton Valley, 5-2. It was a great game between the teams with several great plays and goals.

The 5/6 A Championship saw Davis beat Judge, 14-2. The Darts used strong chemistry and quick ball movement to get out a 6-0 lead before Judge was able to pull one back before the half.

Truman Thompson led the way for the Darts with 5 goals and 5 assists. Lincoln Wade and Nash Watson scored 3 goals each. Kai Bishop had 9 saves. Max Crosby went 11 of 15 from the faceoff X and Ezra Olsen won 2 of 3. Hudson Kemp played like a giant causing 8 turnovers and scooping up 5 groundballs.

“It’s honestly been easy to lead this group because of how hard these boys work,” said Davis Head Coach Sid Thompson. “Snow, rain, or shine, they show up hungry, competitive, and ready to get better. They’re all multi-sport athletes, tough kids, and it starts with parents who believe in team-first, hard work, and accountability.”

In the 5/6 B championship, Skyridge beat Farmington, 9-2. Kash Hunt led the way for the Falcons with 3 goals. Sawyer Hewlett notched two goals. Goalie Benson Pickett had 12 saves for the Falcons.

“I’m so proud of these boys,” said Skyridge Head Coach Justin Hewlett. “From where they were last season and not winning a game to turning it around and progressing every single week. Our wins start with our stout defense and goalie, and our offense got better and better at finding each other and creating scoring opportunities. These boys are absolute dogs.”

Boys First Round Recap/Second Round Preview

Here’s a glance at the action from Tuesday as well as a look ahead to games on Thursday.

6A

No. 1 Corner Canyon v. No. 16 Cedar Valley - The Aviators beat No. 17 Layton, 16-8, in the lone 6A First Round game. Kaleb Davis led the team with 7 goals and 1 assist. Cedar Valley will have its hands full with the Chargers who beat them 27-1 on March 26. The Chargers are the No. 1 team for a reason and will look to continue its winning ways on Thursday. Corner Canyon has won the last 5 6A/Class A Championships and have outscored opponents 100-10 in the last five Second Round games.

No. 2 Skyridge v. No. 15 Copper Hills - Skyridge enters the game scoring just over 15 goals per game on average. The Falcons defense has allowed 99 goals which is 5.8 per game. It will be a tall task for the Grizzlies to pull off the upset. Skyridge has six players with 20 or more goals. Cabell Beuchner leads the charge from the midfield with 46 goals and 30 assists. This is a rematch of last year’s Second Round game where Skyridge won, 18-4.

No. 3 Farmington v. No. 14 American Fork - The Phoenix defense is as stingy as it comes, allowing just 4.7 goals per game. Farmington is capable of scoring in bunches and is led by Kai Beynon (48G, 33A) and Wyatt Salmon (30G, 48A). The Cavemen haven’t reached the Quarterfinals since 2023.

No. 4 Mountain Ridge v. No. 13 Syracuse - The Sentinels have put together a great season by only losing to one other 6A opponent (Corner Canyon). The two teams are giving up around 10 goals per game so whose offense will be able to break through? I’d lean towards Mountain Ridge and JT Rigby who has 109 points on the season already. The Titans are led by Lincoln Sohl and Camden Greenhalgh who have 62 points each.

No. 5 Bingham v. No. 12 Lehi - The Miners have built a great record heading into the playoffs, losing just one game to a 6A opponent which happened to be a one-goal loss to region foe Mountain Ridge on 4/28. Bingham has five players with more than 20 goals: Parker Young, Champ Carlson, Ethan Alldredge, Stratton Anderson and Krew Smith. The Pioneers are led by Reed Neilsen who has 50 goals on the year.

No. 6 Weber v. No. 11 Lone Peak - In order for the Knights to pull off the upset, it will have to slow down the Weber offense who is averaging 14.4 goals per game. The Warriors are scoring at will and are led by Freshman Kage Panter, who has 100 points entering the playoffs. If Panter isn’t scoring, as many as 8 other players could get involved. Weber also holds the advantage at the faceoff stripe where Lance Keller is winning 80% of faceoffs taken. Rhett Hancock is saving 63.5% of shots on goal. Weber hasn’t made it to the Quarterfinals since 2022. Ammon Hawkins and David Aceves are leading the Knights with 42 and 37 points respectively.

No. 7 Riverton v. No. 10 Herriman - These two squads battled to an 8-6 win for Riverton just a week ago. Treyden Applegarth had 2 goals and 2 assists in that game for Riverton. Derek Shulsen had 2 goals and an assist. Herriman had six different goal scorers get one goal each. Faceoffs were virtually even with Herriman winning 8 of 14. I suspect this game will once again be a close one! This game will be streamed on kslsports.com/watch.

No. 8 Westlake v. No. 9 Davis - This will be a classic 8 v. 9 matchup. Both teams enter with 9-9 records. Westlake enters the game scoring 11.9 goals per game while Davis is at 9.4. Westlake is led by Brady Burkinshaw, Rufus Christiansen and Bo Miller. Krew Soper is winning 63% of faceoffs for the Thunder. William Marsh (60 points) and Bennett Kearl (59 points) lead the Darts. Deven Wood and Ryker Taggert each have 25 goals for Davis. This game will be streamed on kslsports.com/watch.

No. 1 Park City will face No. 16 Northridge who beat No. 17 Maple Mountain, 10-0. The game will be tough sledding for Northridge as the Miners have been the best team in 5A all year. Wade Birch and Henry Alnwick lead the Miners but several players play an important role for the Miners offense. Max Gordon is a brick wall in the cage for Park City, registering a save percentage of 61.6% in the regular season. The Miners knocked the Knights out of the playoffs last year in the Quarterfinals.

No. 2 Brighton will host No. 18 Skyline who beat No. 15 Springville, 23-11. The Bengals beat Skyline on April 22, 17-6. It will take a big effort from the Eagles to pull off the upset. Zac Anderson, Gabe Carrera, Cole Murray and Dylan Despain all have 40 points or more. Alex West has 32 takeaways for Brighton.

No. 14 Spanish Fork got the best of No. 19 Fremont, 17-2. Austin Olsen led the Dons with 6 goals and 4 assists and River Anderson had 6 takeaways. The Dons will now play No. 3 Alta on Thursday. The Hawks are led by Beckham Horoba who has 90 points on the season. He’s joined by JJ Massi and Trevor Goins who both have 60 or more points. Kellen Torina is winning 71.5% of faceoffs taken which will pose problems for Spanish Fork.

No. 13 Payson hosted No. 20 Woods Cross and sent the Wildcats home with a 10-4 loss. The reward? A trip to Heber to take on No. 4 Wasatch on Thursday. Wasatch beat Payson on April 22, 13-3. Isaac Roylance leads the Wasps with 66 points on the season. Wasatch has nine players with at least 10 goals and a three-headed faceoff unit with Jonah Ware, Ian McFarland and Zeke Zierenberg averaging a combined 70%. The Wasps defense is allowing 5.2 goals per game.

No. 12 East easily defeated No. 21 Viewmont, 20-4. The Leopards will head up to No. 5 Bountiful on Thursday. Bountiful won the regular season matchup, 17-10. Both teams are scoring 13.3 goals per game. What will East Head Coach Charlie Freedman draw up to stop Bountiful attackman Carter Terry? Terry has 99 points on the season which came from 65 goals and 34 assists. Dawson Allsop is a force to be reckoned with for Bountiful as he is winning 70% of faceoffs taken. Bailey Pearson-Ortolani had 76 points for East and will hope to get teammates Oscar Keegan (45G, 15A), Parker Tate (34G, 22A) and Cade Black (33G, 13) into the mix. Reilly Pearson-Ortolani is winning 60% of faceoffs for the Leopards so the faceoff could be the difference in this game.

No. 11 Box Elder beat No. 22 Hillcrest, 20-3. The Bees will now travel to Provo to take on No. 6 Timpview on Thursday. The T-Birds will look to get back to its winning ways after losing to Wasatch and Pleasant Grove to end the regular season. Aiden Dutson is closing in on 100 points this season. The Sophomore sits with 66 goals and 30 assists heading into the playoffs. Kimball Allred and Owen Esplin have more than 70 points each. Jackson Hyde has won 76% of faceoffs taken and Holden King has a 63% save percentage. For the Bees, look to Isaac Funk, Josh Pugsley and Brigham Ferry to lead the offense. Jett Henrie is saving 65.5% of shots faced for Box Elder.

No. 10 Pleasant Grove took care of business against No. 23 Salem Hills. The Vikings won, 10-4. No. 7 Judge will host Pleasant Grove on Thursday. The Bulldogs are led by Freddy Gowski and Rome Swanwick. Dylan Hersh and Sean Jerome are also key parts to the Bulldogs offense. The Judge defense is stout with Erik Mickelson, Dylan Krannich and Jake Ortega in front of Connor Knight. The Vikings will rely on Quinn Lawrence and Myles Doman to get past the Judge defense.

No. 9 West Field took down No. 24 Roy, 18-5. Cooper Horspool had 6 goals while Lincoln Miller had 4 goals and 2 assists for the Longhorns. West Field will head to No. 8 Olympus on Thursday. The Titans beat the Longhorns on March 7, 9-2. James Cannon is leading the Titans in points with 53 so far this season. Kai Rossi and Talmage Beynon will look to get points as well for the Titans. Maddon Rubsamen won 72% of faceoffs taken in the first meeting for Olympus. That was two months ago though and the Longhorns will look to advance on the back of Grady Call, Taden Call and Gavin Clarke. Porter Lawrence will look to slow down Rubsamen. The Titans will also have to get past one of the best 5A goalies in Carter Thornock.

4A

The No. 1 seeded Juan Diego Soaring Eagle is eager to get back into the 4A Championship game. Its path begins on Thursday against No. 16 Canyon View who beat No. 17 Orem, 10-9. Crew Peterson scored 2 goals and notched 3 assists for the Falcons in the First Round win. Beckham Dittmar had 2 goals and 2 assists. Kohen Carlson made 17 saves. The Falcons will need to stop Noah Schuyler who has 76 points for Juan Diego and is joined by Parker Stolz who has 43 goals. Cooper Pecora has one of the best faceoff percentages in the state as he enters the game winning 74.9% of faceoffs taken.

No. 2 Waterford will face No. 15 Hurricane who beat No. 18 Cedar, 12-8. Brecken Michler led the Tigers with 5 goals and 1 assist. Porter Allred had 2 goals and 3 assists and Parley Watts had 5 goals. The Ravens are scoring 11.8 goals per game while giving up 8.25. Look for Kellen Kemper and Noah Chao to make a difference in this game for Waterford. Luke Hunter has been as good as it gets at the LSM position and will look to push transition and score goals.

No. 14 Crimson Cliffs beat No. 19 Desert Hills, 20-0. Aydan Vidrio had 6 goals and 2 assists while West Secrist had 5 goals and 2 assists. Bridger Butterfield went 11 of 12 at the faceoff dot. The Mustangs will now travel to the other end of the state to take on No. 3 Bear River on Thursday. Preston Wilkinson is leading the Bears with 79 points. Bear River has five goal scorers with 32 or more goals on the season.

No. 13 Jordan v. 20 Mountain View Recap by Cody Elmen
The Jordan Beetdiggers delivered a dominant performance against Mountain View, winning wire-to-wire on a warm evening in Sandy. Jordan dominated possession, winning nearly 90% of face-offs, suffocating Mountain View with their rides, and clearing the ball effectively to set up their offense, earning several more possessions than the Bruins.

Jordan got off to a hot start and never looked back. The Beetdiggers jumped on Mountain View early, as Senior Face-Off Specialist Sam Wright dominated the face-offs from the opening whistle and never let up, going 89% on the day. Time of possession was heavily in favor of the home team, propelling Jordan to a quick 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was more of the same. Jordan’s ride continued to suffocate the Bruins, and Dash May forced a turnover that led to an early goal for Jordan. Then, just as Mountain View seemed to have an opening, senior defender Max Long forced a turnover and quickly moved the ball to junior LSM Jack Nigbur. Nigbur pushed the pace, starting a fast break, and found captain Eric Parchment, who made the extra pass to Ryan McDonald for a beautiful fast break goal. The game would head into halftime with Jordan leading 6-0. As bad as this seemed for Mountain View, it could have been much worse if not for the performance of the Bruins’ goalie, Ocean Wellman, who made at least 5 huge saves right on the crease.

The opening of the third quarter may have been the dagger for Jordan as Sam Wright won the opening face-off and found Cooper Bolton on the crease, extending the lead to 7, less than 10 seconds into the second half. This goal would open the floodgates for the Beetdiggers, who would score 6 in the third quarter. Nigbur continued his dominance in the midfield, causing a turnover that led to a goal off an absolute rocket from Parchment. While this shot was impressive, the goal of the day goes to May, who posted up his defender, rolled to his right hand, and absolutely pinned the corner with a low-to-high missile.

The Bruins weren’t able to get much going until the 4th quarter, but they transitioned a great low-to-low save by Wellman into a gritty one-man clear by Alexander Bouche. Finally, Mountain View set up its offense, and Kemper Best swept to the middle on a wing dodge for the first goal of the day for the Bruins. Best would double his total on their next possession with a huge hit on a ride, picking up the ground ball and scoring his second goal. Jordan would tack on one more goal, leading to a final score of 13-2 for the Beetdiggers.

Senior goalie Victor Reynaud did not see much action in this game; however, he received a huge standing ovation from the home crowd as he exited with a few minutes left. May was the key to Jordan’s offense, scoring 2 goals and 4 assists, putting him over 100 points for his career. Parchment’s shooting ability forced the defense to extend to him, leaving open lanes for his teammates. Wright was unstoppable at the X, allowing Jordan to play make-it, take-it for the entire game. While it’s not possible to give out a player of the game to the Beetdigger rides, Nigbur was the driving force behind that, which is close enough.

The Beetdiggers will head to No. 4 Green Canyon on Thursday. The Wolves scored double the amount of goals that Jordan has this season which should pay dividends in this round of the playoffs. Green Canyon attackman Hayden Reeder is 3 points shy of 100.

No. 12 Dixie sneaked past No. 21 Pine View, 9-3. Now the Flyers will take to the road to play No. 5 Sky View on Thursday in what will surely be the longest distance between teams in the playoffs. Ryan Turman leads the Flyers with 84 points. Drake Bohm leads Sky View with 59 points.

No. 6 Timpanogos will host No. 11 Provo. These two teams are no stranger to each other. Timpanogos won both regular season matchups, 11-4 and 13-5 respectively. Noah Torgersen has 27 goals and 40 assists to lead the Timberwolves in points. Brooks Jensen and Brenner Bolt are the leading goal scorers for Timpanogos. Tash Litster had an impressive 68 takeaways while . Channing Francom has won 77.8% of faceoffs taken. For Provo, the offense runs through Zach Wakefield who has 66 points. Drake Stone will need to have a big day in coal to give the Bulldogs a chance. He is entering the game with a 68.1% statline in goal.

No. 7 Ridgeline v. No. 10 Highland - Ridgeline holds a slight advantage on the offensive side of the ball as they have scored 8.3 goals per game. Highland sits at just 5.5 goals per game. Andrew Johnson has 42 goals for the Riverhawks.

No. 8 Mountain Crest v. No. 9 Snow Canyon - Mountain Crest is averaging 9.5 goals per game while Snow Canyon is averaging 9.4. This one will be won on the defensive end where Mountain Crest is giving up just 6.6 goals per game compared to 8.7 for Snow Canyon.

Girls First Round Recap/Second Round Preview

6A

Only one game in the first round as No. 17 Layton took on No. 16 Westlake, and the Thunder came out on top, easily beating the Lancers, 19-3. Westlake will now go on to face the number one team, Skyridge, on Thursday. While they had a great first round, this is likely the end of the road for the team from Saratoga Springs.

The rest of the bracket is now in play, with No. 8 Herriman taking on No. 9 Copper Hills on Thursday. This could be the best game of the day in 6A, with two well-matched teams desperate to go to the semi-finals. The Grizzlies will likely take it, though, since they have Elise Sam in their corner.

Some matches that are easy to predict are No. 4 Farmington likely winning over No. 12 Corner Canyon, No. 4 Lone Peak toppling No. 13 Bingham, No. 7 Davis triumphing over No. 12 Weber, No. 3 Mountain Ridge, taking down No. 14 American Fork, and No. 6 Syracuse claiming victory over No. 11 Lehi. Oh, and let’s not forget the powerhouse that is Riverton. This almost undefeated team will play No. 15 Cedar Valley, and all bets are that they will advance. Of course, everyone loves a Cinderella story, so we will see what happens.

5A

As expected, in the first round, No. 13 Wasatch beat No. 20 Skyline, 16-2. It’s been a rough season for the Eagles, but there is always next 2027. The Wasps now go on to play the No. 4 Brighton Bengals, and likely get clawed.

In the tightest game of the first round, No. 16 Woods Cross beat No. 17 Box Elder, 11-10. We hope they are savoring the win today, because tomorrow they face No. 1 Park City, and we all know how unstoppable the Miners are.

The knockout of the night was delivered by No. 9 Payson, who took down No. 24 Viewmont 20-1. The Vikings were definitely missing the injured Senior Cecelia Walton last night. Now the Lions go on to play Pleasant Grove.

It was a nail-biter of a game, but in the end, No. 15 West Field triumphed over No. 16 Springville 8-7. They now play No. 2 Fremont on Tuesday. The Wolves will be hard to beat here.

In a Weber County rumble, the No. 10 Bonneville Lakers took down the No. 23 Roy Royals, 14-9. They will now take on another local rival, the No. 7 Clearfield Falcons. While Clearfield has a slightly better record this could be the closest game of the night on Thursday.

It was a close one for No. 14 Northridge when they played No. 19 Maple Mountain, but the team from Layton squeaked out a win, 12-11. The Knights will now face the No. 3 West Jordan Jaguars.

Another close game was between No. 12 Hillcrest and No. 21 Bountiful. Only one point separated the two teams when the final whistle blew, and the Huskies won it, 15-14. They now face the fiercely competitive Salem Hills Skyhawks.

In the final game of the night, the No. 11 Alta Hawks were no match for the No. 22 Timpview Thunderbirds. The Hawks ran away with it 19-2, setting them up for a rematch with No. 6 Olympus, whom they lost to earlier in the year.

4A

This is a great bracket to watch! Great contests and close games in the first round.

In the first round of the 2026 4A girls lacrosse playoffs, No. 19 Crimson Cliffs traveled north to face off against the No. 14 Orem Tigers. Ron Hill was on site and able to get the details.

The Mustangs opened the game with significant momentum, ending the first quarter with a 3-0 lead following an initial goal by Lily Larson and two additional scores from teammate Shelby See. Larson continued this scoring streak early in the second quarter, extending the Mustangs’ lead to a dominant 4-0.

Orem soon responded with three unanswered points from Sophie MacArthur and Liv Palmer, narrowing the score to 4-3 by the halftime break. MacArthur tied the game for the first time early in the third quarter. While Ady Brown briefly regained the lead for Crimson Cliffs, Orem’s Ryann Hatch and Camri Frahm answered back to give the Tigers their first lead of the game at 6-5 by the end of the period.

The final quarter was a high-stakes exchange of goals. Sadie Brooks tied the game for the Mustangs before Hatch reclaimed the lead for Orem. Grace Winkle leveled the score once more with five minutes left, but Orem captain Ryann Hatch ultimately found the back of the net for the final winning goal, clinching a hard-fought victory for the Tigers.

The No. 16 Snow Canyon Warriors traveled north and claimed a victory over the No. 17 Mountain Crest Mustangs 10-7. They now face the top team in the bracket, Bear River, on Thursday.

In one of two blowouts for the first round No. 9 Ridgeline completely shut down No. 24 Uintah 22-0. The Riverhawks now have an equally good chance to do it again when they face the No. 8 Sky View Bobcats.

It could have been a barnburner, but No. 15 Logan easily took down No. 16 Juan Diego. The eagle will soar no longer. The Grizzlies will now host the No. 2 Provo Bulldogs on Thursday. While Logan is stronger at home than they are on the road, this will be an uphill battle.

In the southern part of the state, No. 10 Canyon View claimed victory over No. 23 Pine View, 16-2. They will now head North to face No. 9 Highland, and face the scoring power of Olive Chastang, Meg Hoglund, Josie Fonarow, and Alexa Tracey.

Also in the southern part of the state No. 13 Desert Hills took down No. 20 Cedar 19-11. They now take on No. 4 Hurricane, a team with a similar record for the year, so either could be advancing to the semis.

In Salt Lake last night, we had No. 12 Jordan triumphing over No. 21 Mountain View, 19-9. The Beetdiggers will now face the No. 5 Timpanogos Timberwolves, and this is a real wild card. Senior Amber Martinez could be the key to a Jordan victory, and it’s up to Timpanogos Senior Jada Intharath to stop her.

We also saw the No. 11 Waterford Ravens easily take down the No. 22 East Leopards 22-0. They now face No. 6 Green Canyon. The teams have similar records, but Waterford has faced tougher opponents this year, so they are likely to come out on top.

I then high-tailed it out to Herriman for the PLL games. I missed the first game (sad face) but was able to catch up with Ryan Stines, who scored his first PLL goal, in the press area. So happy for him. He’s an incredible person and an incredible lacrosse player.

Saturday began with the MCLA Championship at 9:00 am, then the High School Bracket Reveal at 10:00 am then the PLL games at 2:30 pm and 5:00 pm. I sat next to the PLL DJ at the top of the stadium and came to the conclusion he has the best job in the league or at a minimum, the least stressful. After the Archers win I chatted with Patrick Sanger, who has been shooting lacrosse for ULR for a long time then headed to the press conference with Coach Bates, Stines and Pederson. It was a great time as the Arrowhead guys and Sean Walker from KSL were there to ask questions. After, I was walking out as the sun was setting and an overwhelming sense of gratitude came over me. I’ve found a lot of inspiration in the travel moments of lacrosse: walking out of a venue late at night, sitting in a plane on a tarmac or listening to lacrosse podcasts on the way to a game. It’s a great time to reflect and ponder. I talked to a lot of great people this weekend who care a lot about our sport, from Logan to St. George, and want it to continue to succeed. We’re lucky to be part of the best sport in the best state.

As the next two weeks wind down the 2026 season, I want to thank you for letting the Utah Lax Report come along for the ride. In case you missed it, the BYU Cougars beat Virginia Tech on Saturday in the MCLA D-I National Championship, 16-13. Gavin Taylor had 8 goals with a hurt shoulder. Mason Quick had 3 goals and 2 assists. Hutton Murphy had 4 goals and 3 assists while Stew Vassau had 1 goal. It was an incredible season for the Cougar offense who seemed to feed the hot hand each game with several players contributing including the four above and Cade Kirschner. BYU had Quick and Taylor tally over 100 points. The Cougar defense was stellar with goalie Easton Wilkey leading the way with 22 saves. Andrew Hunt, J.P. Jones, Luke Tucker, Jackson Wall, Taylor Crump, Sawyer Beck, Isaac Anderson, Marcus Ball, Britain Barker, Devin Nguyen, Dylan Johnson and Jack Leiseth were key for the Cougars defense. You can see the Cougars depth was a big reason they were able to overcome the Hokies. The Bennion brothers won 10 faceoffs.

In the NCAA ranks, Jon King (Corner Canyon) and Penn State beat Army and will now take on Princeton on May 17. In D-II, Hunter Keller (Davis) helped Lewis win its first round game against Newberry and will face No. 1 Tampa on Wednesday. In D-III, Reid Vandenberg (Park City) and Babson beat Massachusetts Maritime and St. Lawrence on the weekend and will now take on RIT. Cooper Stauffer (Waterford) and Bowdoin beat Scranton and Stevens and will take on Hope on Friday. Tufts and the Beyer brothers (Park City) will face York (PA).

The Utah Women’s lacrosse team is heading to Florida this week to open up play in the WCLA Tournament.

“We’re psyched,” said Utah Head Coach Glee Corsetti. “We’re the only team from Utah going and doing it with 12 underclass girls who are playing is amazing and so inspiring for the future of the program. We’re excited for this dynasty these seniors have contributed to and I’m so excited that so many are up for national awards.”

The Utes are the No. 12 seed and will take on No. 5 Michigan.

“It’s going to be a good game but we’ve prepared for it and I believe they’re beatable,” said Corsetti. “Our defense is locked and ready and our attack has brand new plays, found their “homes”, and found the net. We have midfield transitions to shift up legs and circle players and some killer draw takers.”

In the NCAA tournaments, Olivia Prosper (Juan Diego) and Stanford beat the Anné sisters (Olympus) and Penn State on Friday then the Cardinal beat Michigan on Saturday and will now face North Carolina on Friday.

There’s just one game in the 6A First Round and it’s No. 17 Layton heading to No. 16 Cedar Valley on Tuesday. Both teams fell to their common opponents who were Davis and Bingham. Henry Bitner and David Murdock lead the Lancers in points while Kaleb Davis and Jake Huffaker lead the Aviators. The winner will take on No. 1 Corner Canyon on Thursday.

5A First Round
No. 9 West Field v. No. 24 Roy - These two squads have played twice already with West Field winning both games, 15-4 on 4/15 and 21-5 on 5/8. The winner will face No. 8 Olympus on Thursday.

No. 10 Pleasant Grove v. No. 23 Salem Hills - The Vikings beat the Skyhawks, 16-5, on April 22. The winner will face No. 7 Judge Memorial on Thursday.

No. 11 Box Elder v. No. 22 Hillcrest - Box Elder comes into the game at 13-4 with losses coming to Bountiful, Farmington and twice to West Field. The Bees are hoping to get back into the Quarterfinals after making it in 2024 but missing by a goal last year. The winner of this game will head to No. 6 Timpview on Thursday.

No. 12 East v. No. 21 Viewmont - The Leopards scored 220 goals this season and allowed 180. Viewmont scored 100 and allowed 209. This one will lean towards the Leopards are 10-7 and enter the game having gone 3-2 in its last 5 games. The winner will face No. 5 Bountiful on Thursday.

No. 13 Payson v. No. 20 Woods Cross - These two squads faced off on March 4 with Payson winning 12-1. A lot has happened since then but Payson is still the favorite in this one. Both teams are scoring around the same amount of goals per game but the Payson defense is allowing almost half of what the Wildcats defense is. The winner will take on No. 4 Wasatch on Thursday.

No. 14 Spanish Fork v. No. 19 Fremont - These two teams didn’t play each other and have no common opponents which makes sense with the geographic distance between the two schools. The stats favor Spanish Fork but you never know what the Silverwolves have in store come playoff time. The winner takes on No. 3 Alta on Thursday.

No. 15 Springville v. No. 18 Skyline - This should be a great battle on Tuesday. Both teams beat Salem Hills and Viewmont but lost to Payson. I think the Springville defense will be the difference in this one. The winner will play No. 2 Brighton on Thursday.

No. 16 Northridge v. No. 17 Maple Mountain - Northridge hosts the Eagles and will hope to take home a playoff win. Micah Olsen is approaching the 100 point mark this season and will be the one to look to for the Knights. The winner head to Park City to play the No. 1 seeded Miners on Thursday.

No. 14 Crimson Cliffs v. No. 19 Desert Hills - These two are familiar with each other having played twice so far this season. Crimson Cliffs won both games. The first game was 17-3 but the second was just 7-3. This should be a classic matchup with the winner heading to No. 3 Bear River on Thursday.

No. 15 Hurricane v. No. 18 Cedar - Hurricane beat the Reds on April 1, 10-8. The Tigers are scoring more goals per game but the Reds won’t care. This should come down to the wire. The winner faces No. 2 Waterford on Thursday.

No. 16 Canyon View v. No. 17 Orem - Both teams lost to Spanish Fork and Crimson Cliffs. Both teams are scoring nearly the same amount of goals per game but the Canyon View defense has allowed 118 goals less. The winner faces No. 1 Juan Diego on Thursday.

Boys Spotlight Game of the Week by Hill and Hill Photography

Week 10 – Copper Hills vs Skyline

In a regular-season finale that lived up to the hype, the 5A Skyline Eagles narrowly escaped with a 12–11 victory over the 6A Copper Hills Grizzlies. Following a festive Senior Night, the Eagles dominated early; Luke Carlston opened the scoring just a minute in, followed quickly by goals from Brady Child, Mitch Nielson, and Peter Thompson to secure a 4–0 first-quarter lead.

The advantage grew to 5–0 early in the second before the Grizzlies found their spark. Led by Gage Holder’s three goals and Parson Duncan’s stellar goaltending, Copper Hills cut the deficit to 6–3 by halftime.

Skyline appeared to put the game away in the third quarter, regaining momentum with a four-goal burst from TJ Brown, Duncan Monahan, and Child to build a commanding 10–3 cushion. However, the Grizzlies mounted a late-game surge. Behind Carter Kesler’s dominance at the face-off X and an incredible eight-goal performance from Holder, Copper Hills went on a 7–0 run to tie the game at 10–10 with just three minutes remaining.

In the final moments, Skyline’s Monahan and Child answered back to reclaim a two-point lead. Though Holder scored once more with 37 seconds left to keep the pressure on, the Eagles controlled the final possession to seal the win.

There is a lot of action on Tuesday in the 5A playoffs. First, No. 16 Woods Cross will face off with No. 17 Box Elder. The winner of that match will then head to play the top team in the division, and possibly the state, Park City.

Elsewhere in the state, No. 9 Payson will battle No. 24 Viewmont, with the winner of that game slated to play No. 8 Pleasant Grove.

No. 15 West Field will play No. 18 Springville to see who will take on No. 2 Fremont in the next round. The Longhorns have a better record going into the game, and goalie senior MacKenzie Souza has an impressive save rate, so they are likely to take the win.

In a Weber County face off No. 23 Roy will play No. 10 Bonneville, with the Lakers expected to advance to the next round and compete against No. 7 Clearfield. And No. 14 Northridge will play No. 19 Maple Mountain.

In the Salt Lake valley, there will be several great contests, with No. 20 Skyline playing No. 13 Wasatch to see who will take on No. 4 Brighton, while No. 12 Hillcrest will play No. 21 Bountiful, and No. 11 Alta will play No. 22 Timpview.

4A First Round
This could be the most interesting playoff series in the state this year. These teams have been battling all year and have had some surprising results.

In a cross-state game, No. 17 Mountain Crest will travel south to play No. 16 Snow Canyon. Both teams are coming into the game with more losses than wins on their scorecards, so it will be interesting to see who comes out on top to face top-ranked Bear River later in the week.

No. 9 Ridgeline will face off against No. 24 Uintah. The Riverhawks have had an uneven season, but should advance from this game. Keep an eye out for top scorer Eme Welker.

In what could be the most interesting game of this first round No. 18 Juan Diego will travel north to take on No. 15 Logan. While Juan Diego has played well at home, they haven’t done well on the road, so we will see if they can pull it off.

In the southern part of the state No. 10 Canyon View will play No. 23 Pine View to determine who will head to Salt Lake City and play No. 7 Highland on Thursday. Looking at the records for both teams it will likely be Canyon View, but you never know what might happen.

Also in the southern part of the state No. 13 Desert Hills will play No. 20 Cedar. It looks to be Desert Hills game to lose, and sophomore Mady Eriksen is not likely to let that happen.

Two teams that are very well matched going into the first round are No. 14 Orem and No. 19 Crimson Cliffs. They will play in Utah County for the first round.

Finally, in Salt Lake, we have No. 12 Jordan playing No. 21 Mountain View, and No. 11 Waterford playing No. 22 East. Both Jordan and Waterford are expected to come out on top. Waterford could be a wild card here moving forward. They have been pulling off some surprising upsets.

Week 10 - Bonneville vs Northridge

The Utah Lax Report “Spotlight Game of the Week” delivered on its promise as the Northridge Knights fended off a massive second-half comeback by the Bonneville Lakers. With 5A playoff seeding at stake, Northridge utilized the energy of Senior Night to dominate early, controlling possession for nearly the entire first quarter.

The Knights stormed to a 10–2 halftime lead, fueled by a balanced attack from Mollie Larsen, Roxey Roberts, Sadie Carter, and Sarah Larsen. Bonneville’s only early answers came from Stacey Tesch, who began what would become a dominant six-goal performance with a first-quarter penalty shot.

The momentum shifted entirely in the second half. Led by spirited play from goalie Grace Ludlow, the Lakers’ defense tightened, sparking a six-point third-quarter explosion. Goals from Tesch, Aniston Clawson, and Miley Falk cut the deficit to 11–8 heading into the final frame.

The fourth quarter saw Bonneville pull within a single goal after strikes from Tesch and Aspyn Cornia. However, the Larsen sisters provided a crucial defensive stand to halt the Lakers’ run. Despite Tesch adding two more late goals to her tally, a timely insurance goal by Roberts allowed Northridge to lock in the 14–12 victory.

PLL

Day One was recapped in our Saturday newsletter which you can read here. Day Two was just as exciting with the Waterdogs beating the Whipsnakes, 16-14. Michael Sowers had 3 goals and 2 assists while Jack Hannah had 2 goals and 2 assists. Connor Kelly had 2, 2-point goals. Connor Farrell went 18-28 at the faceoff X then celebrated the win at JCW’s. Matt DeLuca had 15 saves. Matt Brandau had 4 goals and 1 assists for the Whipsnakes.

In the nightcap, the Archers beat the Outlaws, 10-7. Connor Fields had some incredible goals and finished with 3 goals and 1 assist. Sam King had 2 goals and 2 assists while Ryan Stines had 1 goal and 2 assists. Beau Pederson had a goal and an assist. The Archers defense was the star of the show holding the Outlaws scoreless in the fourth quarter which hasn’t happened since August 10, 2024 when the Chaos blanked the Outlaws in the second quarter that game.

BYU Wins 6th MCLA National Championship

The BYU Cougars completed a 20-1 season this morning by winning the 2026 MCLA D-I Championship, 16-13, against Virginia Tech.

BYU started the game on a 4-0 run with two goals each by Gavin Taylor and Mason Quick. Virginia Tech answered with 3 goals then both teams scored one more to make the score 5-4 in favor of BYU after the first quarter.

Virginia Tech scored 3 and allowed two for BYU in the second quarter which led to a halftime score of 7-7.

Virginia Tech earned its first lead of the game early in the third quarter but a BYU goal by Taylor tied the game at 8. Virginia Tech regained the lead but BYU then scored five straight goals to take a 13-9 lead late in the third quarter. Virginia Tech scored one before the end of the quarter to make it 13-10 heading into the final frame.

Both teams scored three goals in the quarter to make the final score 16-13.

Taylor had 8 goals to lead the Cougars. He also did with a visibly banged up shoulder. Easton Wilkey had 22 saves for BYU. Mason Quick, Stew Vassau and Hutton Murphy combined to score the other 8 goals for BYU.

The Cougars add this year as its 6th National Championship: 1997, 2000, 2007, 2011 and 2024. BYU also won the 2021 Invitational.

Stines, DiPonio Debut in PLL

It was a historic Friday night in Herriman as former Utah players, Ryan Stines and Nikko DiPonio, made their professional lacrosse debuts.

The Archers ultimately fell to the Redwoods, 9-5, but Stines opened his PLL scoring campaign at the 2:33 mark in the second quarter on a lefty rip down the alley. Stines also had an assist in the third quarter when he found Mac O’Keefe on the manup opportunity. Park City native Beau Pederson had 1 caused turnover and two groundballs for the Archers.

DiPonio started at close defense for the Atlas and had a caused turnover and a pair of groundballs in the 16-12 win. The game was tied at 2 after the first quarter but a seven goal second quarter by the Atlas gave them some breathing room. Carolina clawed back and kept the game within one goal until two late goals by the Atlas put the game out of reach.

The Archers will take on the Outlaws today at 5:00pm in what has become the best rivalry in the PLL. If you can’t make it to the game, it will be on ESPN 2.

The Atlas play the Whipsnakes next Friday.

Beau Pederson’s lacrosse journey began almost as early as possible. With a stick in his hands from the time he was a toddler, Beau quickly fell in love with the creativity, competition, and team-first nature of the sport. That passion carried him through a highly competitive recruiting environment, eventually leading to Princeton, where he played in the Ivy League before completing a graduate year at Michigan.

That combination gave Beau a rare perspective by competing in two elite conferences while preparing for the next level. Professional lacrosse wasn’t always the goal, but as his college career progressed, it became a reality. Being drafted by Utah in the PLL’s first year of home cities was a full‑circle moment, made even more meaningful by playing for the same coach who recruited him years earlier. Scoring his first professional goal at home in front of friends and family cemented his place as one of Utah’s own.

Dobson’s path took a very different shape. Raised in Canada’s deeply ingrained lacrosse culture, Brett was immersed in the game from a young age. After transitioning to goalie he leaned into the position with total commitment. His development accelerated at The Hill Academy, where daily exposure to professional players made the dream tangible.

Despite that background, Brett’s recruiting journey wasn’t traditional. His lone Division I opportunity came from St. Bonaventure, a brand‑new program at the time. Instead of viewing it as a limitation, Brett embraced the challenge of building something from scratch. Facing heavy shot volumes and constant pressure, he sharpened the mental toughness that would later define his pro career.

That toughness paid off on draft night, when Brett was selected as the first goalie off the board in the PLL Draft, a moment that validated years of belief, resilience, and family sacrifice. Since then, he’s become a cornerstone for the Archers, earning championships, Finals MVP honors, and respect across both field and box lacrosse as a member of the Georgia Swarm in the NLL.

What unites Beau and Brett now is playing for the Utah Archers. Both players have spoken about the energy, passion, and connection they feel here. Whether it’s playing in front of packed crowds, visiting youth programs, or interacting with fans who genuinely care about the game. Their presence gives young Utah players something tangible to aspire to, reinforcing that elite lacrosse careers can start anywhere.

In just two days, the PLL is officially back, and this time, it’s different.

This time, it’s here. It’s home to start.

Not only are we getting more games and more action, but we get to see twice as much in our great home state of Utah. As much as it’s been fun to let other states get the opening weekend, it’s finally coming to the best fans in the league. We’re slated to have the biggest and loudest weekend the PLL has ever seen and the message from the Utah Arrowhead (your official supporter group for the Utah Archers) is to get in early and join the best fans in the league.

Utah lacrosse has only been rising astronomically over the past decade and we’re here to make sure that we don’t slow down. This weekend is more than just two home games.

We’re going to set the tone for the rest of the season. Let’s get into it.

New to Lacrosse? Here’s Why You’ll Love It

Even if you’ve never picked up a stick, the game is easy to get hooked on.

We’ve got:

• Non-stop action with a shorter shot clock (52 seconds compared to the 80 seconds in college)

• A two-point arc that can flip the game on its head (also not in the college game)

• The best shooters in the world are painting corners

• Big hits & even bigger personalities

Think basketball pace, hockey physicality, and soccer finesse rolled into one. The smaller rules and details will get picked up naturally, just cheer loudly for the Orange and Blue and the rest will come with time.

The Utah Archers - Bows Up!

The Archers have built their reputation a little bit differently from the rest of the teams in the league. Coach Bates has built a unique culture of discipline and patience. Unlike most other teams in the PLL, the Archers have a leadership style led by Captain America himself, Tom Schreiber, that’s steady and stoic instead of chaotic and explosive. Just like a shot from a true archer, it’s straight-edged, calculated, and calm.

At the Arrowhead, we’ve had the opportunity to sit down with many of these guys on our podcast and they all tell the same story: the locker room is just built different. It’s the most well-oiled machine in the league and a big testament to how elite the Archers coaching staff is.

If you missed out on last season, to be frank, you didn’t miss much. The team was plagued with injuries and even despite star players dropping throughout the year we just barely missed the playoffs after a tough homecoming late last summer. The good news out of this is that we got the No. 1 Draft Pick in this year’s draft.

Breaking Down the Team

Here is your in-depth review of each part of the Archers team and some key players to watch.

Attack

We’ve had a pretty stellar attack line the last few years and nothing is changing this year. Despite rumors that he might not play, #5 Connor Fields (Fieldsy) is back and the magician is ready to put on a show once again. He’s a walking highlight reel and if you’ve watched a SportsCenter Top 10 in the past two years, you’ve likely already seen him. Fields is joined by #7 Mac O’Keefe, the lefty legend. Arguably the best sniper in the league. Defenses have to work overtime to make sure he doesn’t get his hands free.

The third attackman spot is a bit of a question mark. Last year, this spot was held by Matt Moore before his hot streak ended in injury. With Moore still out, and with other potential fill-ins injured this will be an interesting spot to watch. #9 Sam King (the rookie phenom), seems likely to fill this role but could we see the new kid out of the University of Utah fill this spot? #6 Ryan Stines (the 2nd round draft pick) is every bit as advertised and could make a big splash this weekend.

TL/DR: We’re looking really solid at attack.

Offensive Midfield

With Schreiber (injury), Tre Leclaire (box lacrosse playoffs), and Grant Ament (injury) out this weekend, there are some big shoes to fill and this is likely the biggest question mark on the team. We’re led by every player’s favorite player #13 Ryan Ambler - the captain. Other than ‘Rambler’ we’ve got the opportunity to watch who steps up in the midfield. I’ve got a feeling that we’ll see some potential stars emerge from this Archers offensive midfield, potentially the D-III star #2 CK Giancola? We’ll have to wait and see. Perhaps Stines comes out of the box to help the O-mids.

TL/DR: Big question mark here. We’ll need to rely on some guys to step up big.

Faceoff

#99 Mike Sisselberger sustained a hand injury early in the season last year and could never quite get healthy. Siss is back this year and is ready to show everyone once again why he was a first-round pick back in 2023. It may take some time to get back into the flow but expect Siss to be back this year.

TL/DR: Expect a big bounce-back in our faceoff wins this year.

Defensive Midfield

What do you do when you already have the best defensive midfield in the league? If you’re Coach Bates you decide to then draft the best Defensive midfielder prospect ever in Aidan Maguire out of Duke. This is clearly going to be the biggest strength of this Archers team, between #54 Piper Bond, #31 Connor Maher, and the Park-City native #89 Beau Pederson, this D-middie room is stacked and is going to be electric. Bates clearly has some cards up his sleeve that he is looking to use with these D-mids. We’ll be missing Maguire for a few weeks as he is playing for Duke in the NCAA tournament but we can expect him to make an instant impact starting around June.

TL/DR: The greatest D-middie room to exist. Get excited.

Defense

We took a big hit in losing Graeme Hossack (our star long-pole) and are going to need to find a replacement fast. Additionally, we’re going to be missing Warren Jeffrey (our other star long-pole) for at least a week or two. We have stud poles in #77 Mason Woodward and #46 Brendan Lavelle that will fill in these gaps but we’re going to need to see some newer players step in and make an instant impact. Keep an eye on #17 Mitchell Dunham (6-5, 220 linebacker build) to be one of those guys.

TL/DR: Big losses here, but great players to step up. I’m confident this defense will be legit.

Goalie

Our back-to-back Championship MVP goalie in Brett Dobson (Dobber) is out for the NLL (box lacrosse) playoffs for at least this weekend and so we will likely be relying on #18 Nick Washuta (Tubs). Don’t sleep on Washuta, he’s been with the Archers for awhile and has stepped up in big moments when Dobson is out. Washuta has starting goalie level talent in this league and will turn some heads. Dobber will be back to lead the defense once he’s back in a few weeks.

TL/DR: Washuta will fill in for Dobson; Washuta’s legit.

Homecoming Week

Two more days! Whether you show up in the stand or are watching from home, cheer loud for the boys in blue and orange. We’re building something big out here in Utah and everyone ought to be proud of the energy and loyalty that we bring to this league. And it’s only getting started.

Tim Haslam: Herriman is scoring more goals per game, but giving up more too. I’m still going with the Mustangs though!

Ron Hill: I'm going with Riverton's physicality on this one in a tight game.

Libby Mitchell: I think Riverton will win. They have a better record and with Jayden Wilcken and Brandon Winters guarding the goal they don’t let many points through.

Dane Stewart: I like the Silverwovles in this one.

Austin Whiting: With better results in similar games, I like Herriman here. 10-8.

TH: Two of the best coaches in the state in a classic chess match. I think the Park City defense will be the difference. Miners win 8-5.

RH: The game of the week that is for sure, I’m going with Corner Canyon, they have found themselves.

LM: Park City. Both teams are unstoppable right now.

DS: Park City in a close one.

AW: Corner Canyon has been on a tear but Park City looks to be the best in state currently. I’ll take the Miners, 10-9.

RH: Provo is my sleeper in girls lacrosse this year, I think they stay on track. Provo wins.

LM: Provo has had a stellar season, but Lone Peak is hungry and looking to improve their record. They win.

DS: I think Lone Peak gets the win.

AW: I’ll take Lone Peak here, 13-11.

May 6 - Green Canyon v. Sky View

RPI: Green Canyon #8, Sky View #7
Scoring: Green Canyon 7.8 GF/9.7 GA vs Sky View 5.8 GF/9.6 GA

RH: I think Green Canyon gets the split, Green Canyon in a tight one.

LM: These are not teams I am super familiar with, but I do like what I have seen from Green Canyon. I think they take the upset.

DS: Sky View will remain supreme.

AW: I think Sky View will repeat in this matchup, 9-7.

For those who have been following along, we have been teasing the ULR Photo of the Year Contest. All the information you need can be found in this document. Please tell your team photographers, student photographers and anyone else who has taken a lacrosse photo this year!

The theme is ‘Spirit of the Game’. We’re looking for any and all photos that can be tied to the theme.

PLL Comes To Town

We hope to see you at Zions Bank Stadium this weekend as the PLL opens its 2026 season in our backyard.

On Friday, the Redwoods will take on the Archers followed by the Atlas and Chaos.

On Saturday, the Waterdogs take on the Whipsnakes. Then the Outlaws will play the Archers which is a great rivalry! We’ll have more PLL content as the week goes on.

College

Only Utah was in action this week as they took on Air Force in the ASUN Semifinals. It was another classic game between these two squads which saw Air Force come away with another one-goal win, 13-12. Zach White had a career day, scoring 4 goals and assisting on another 4. The Utes finished the season 9-5.

No. 1 BYU is taking on No. 16 Michigan State while No. 2 UVU faces No. 15 Oregon.

In 2024, No. 1 BYU also played No. 16 Michigan State. BYU won that game 19-4. BYU went on to win the National Championship that year with wins over No. 8 San Diego State, No. 4 Liberty and of course, No. 14 UVU.

This will be the first matchup between UVU and Oregon. The teams were scheduled to play in 2020 but we know how that went. The Ducks came to Utah this year and played BYU, a 19-9 loss, and the Utah Club team, a 12-11 loss. UVU was the No. 2 seed last year and beat No. 15 Boise State, 18-7, No. 7 Northeastern, 14-5, then lost to No. 3 Georgia Tech, 17-14 in the semis.

Thanks to all those who entered an MCLA bracket! Here’s who people predicted to win it all: 65% picked UVU and 35% picked BYU. Next, here’s who was predicted to join BYU/UVU in the semis: Virginia Tech (81%), Tennessee (51%), Florida State (43%), South Carolina (16%), Sant Diego State (3%) and Arizona, Cal, Georgia (2%).

The Utah Women’s team will play Michigan next week in the WCLA National Tournament.

Boys’ Week 9 Coaches Poll

No. 1 Park City - The Miners took down No. 6 Olympus on Tuesday, 8-4. The Miners had 7 different players get a goal. Reid McCurdy had takeaways. On Friday, the Miners beat No. 8 Judge, 10-3. Park City heads to No. 2 Corner Canyon on Wednesday then hosts Green Canyon on Friday.

No. 2 Corner Canyon - The Chargers beat No. 9 Skyridge on Tuesday, 15-10. Pierson DeGracie had 6 goals and 1 assist. Luke Fisher and Ren Neilson both had 3 goals and 1 assist. Tanner Adamson continued playing well, notching 4 takeaways. Jack Rasmussen had 14 saves. The Chargers then beat Lehi on Friday, 16-4. Corner Canyon will host No. 1 Park City on Wednesday then host East on Friday.

No. 3 Brighton - The Bengals beat Juan Diego on Tuesday, 16-2, then beat Viewmont on Friday, 16-5. Gabe Carrera notched his 300th point against Viewmont. The Bengals take on No. 6 Olympus on Wednesday.

No. 4 Farmington - The Phoenix beat Weber on Tuesday, 9-6. Wyatt Salmon had 4 assists while Kai Beynon had 2 goals and 2 assists. Austin Briggs had 10 takeaways. Farmington then beat Davis, 16-6. Farmington will face Syracuse on Tuesday, Layton on Thursday and No. 8 Judge on Friday.

No. 5 Alta - The Hawks beat Skyline on Wednesday, 16-6, then lost to No. 6 Olympus, 9-8, on Friday. See the recap below! Kellen Torina won 20 of 21 faceoffs against the Titans. Alta will host Bountiful on Wednesday.

No. 6 Olympus - The Titans beat Viewmont, 20-1, on Wednesday then beat No. 5 Alta, 9-8, on Friday. Kai Rossi led the Titans with 1 goal and 2 assists. James Cannon, Thomas Ockey and Talmage Beynon each had 2 goals. See the recap below! The Titans will take on No. 3 Brighton on Wednesday.

No. 7 Bountiful - The Redhawks beat Woods Cross, 21-5, and Skyline, 17-7. Carter Terry had 5 goals and 4 assists against Skyline. A mid-week showdown with No. 5 Alta will close out the regular season for Bountiful.

No. 8 Judge - The Bulldogs beat West Jordan, 16-4, on Wednesday then lost to No. 1 Park City on Friday, 10-3. Freddy Gowski had 4 goals and 4 assists against West Jordan. Judge takes on Lone Peak on Wednesday and No. 4 Farmington on Friday.

No. 9 Skyridge - The Falcons lost to No. 2 Corner Canyon on Tuesday, 15-10, then escaped Lone Peak with a one goal win, 11-10, on Friday. Cabell Buechner had 3 goals and 2 assists against Corner Canyon. Skyridge will play Hillcrest on Friday.

No. 10 Wasatch - The Wasps enter the polls after beating Pleasant Grove, 10-7, and Timpview, 11-9, this week. Kash Russell had 3 goals and an assist against Pleasant Grove. Wasatch will face Springville and Timpanogos this week.

Region Outlook

This is how we see the regions shaking out. Obviously anything can happen and nothing is set in stone until all games are played!

Region 1 - This one is all but wrapped up in favor of Farmington. Even if the Phoenix were to lose to Syracuse and Layton, they’d still have the tiebreaker over Weber.

Region 2 - Mountain Ridge has won the region. The Sentinels sit at 5-0 and have one region game against 0-5 Cedar Valley. The Sentinels also have the tie-breaker over Bingham.

Region 3 - This region belongs to Corner Canyon who clinched the region title with wins over Skyridge and Lehi this week.

Region 4 - Park City won the region on Friday after beating Judge. East and West Jordan play on Wednesday to see who will be the third place team in the region.

Region 5 - This region plays each other home and away so there are still games to be played that could change the standing. However, West Field is 10-0 and faces Bonneville and Roy this week. The Longhorns already beat those teams by a combined score of 29-5. I’ve seen crazy things happen, but it’s a safe bet that West Field will win this region.

Region 6 - I thought the picture would become clearer after this week but Olympus beating Alta didn’t help that happen. Four teams sit at 4-1 entering the week. Alta plays Bountiful and Olympus plays Brighton on Wednesday. Whoever wins those games will be co-region champions.

Region 7 - Wasatch won the region after beating Pleasant Grove and Timpview this week.

Region 8 - Timpanogos won the region after beating Provo on Wednesday.

Region 9 - Snow Canyon won the region after beating Hurricane on Wednesday.

Region 10 - Juan Diego leads at 3-0 but this will be decided this week with a region playoff. Juan Diego plays Highland and Waterford plays Jordan in the semis. The final will be on Friday.

Region 11 - Bear River clinched the region after beating Green Canyon and Sky View this week.

Week 9 – Alta vs Olympus

A classic Region 6 battle unfolded Friday night at Olympus High School as two Top 5 teams vied for supremacy in the state’s toughest region. The matchup between the Alta Hawks and Olympus Titans carried significant weight, impacting both the region championship race and upcoming playoff seeding.

After a scoreless five-minute opening, Olympus exploded for three goals in just 90 seconds. Thomas Ockey sparked the run with a rebound shot at the 7:45 mark, followed quickly by tallies from James Cannon and Talmage Beynon. Trailing 3-0, Alta called a timeout to regroup. The Hawks’ defense, anchored by goalie Bridger Tueller, responded by shutting down the Titan offense for the remainder of the quarter.

The second quarter mirrored the first’s rapid pace but favored the Hawks. After a long defensive stalemate, Hogan Stout and Trevor Goins (two goals) leveled the score at 3-3 in a 77-second blitz. The rest of the half became a seesaw battle: Drake Woolley (Olympus) and Jace Brown (Alta) traded goals before Beynon regained the lead for the Titans. Alta’s Beckham Horoba found an opening late in the period to tie the game at 5-5 heading into halftime.

Defenses took center stage in the third quarter as Tueller and Olympus goalie Andrew Borden traded impressive saves. Alta briefly seized the momentum with goals from Colby Blackham and a fast-break strike by Drew Jansson to take their first lead at 7-5. However, James Cannon answered for Olympus just before the buzzer to cut the deficit to one.

With Alta leading 7-6 entering the fourth, the vocal crowd was treated to a frantic finish. After nine minutes of scoreless play, Olympus’ Brigham Thompson tied the game with three minutes remaining. Alta responded immediately; face-off specialist Kellen Torina won the draw and assisted a goal just eight seconds later to retake the lead.

The Titans refused to go away. Ockey drove to the net to tie the score at 8-8 with 2:41 left. Following several near-misses that rattled the pipes, William Southwick finally found the back of the net to secure a grueling 9-8 victory for Olympus.

The road remains difficult for the Titans as they continue their title chase against rival Brighton this Wednesday. Alta faces an equally tough test, hosting league-leader Bountiful this Wednesday to close out the 2026 regular season.

Girls’ Week 9 Coaches Poll

No. 1 Park City - This team is tough! They have proven they are the best in the state, and that it’s not a question of if they will win a game, but by how much.

No. 2 Riverton - The team fell to the Miners on Tuesday, but they didn’t go down without a fight. The game was FIRE! They will likely resume their winning streak this week as we head into region play.

No. 3 Skyridge is a top contender for the 6A championship. Senior Tessa Jamison is leading the team in scoring and has topped 200 career points at the school.

No. 4 Bear River is also undefeated so far this season, but they didn’t have a brush with the Miners. Check out Mollie Call, who is averaging between five and seven goals a game.

No. 5 Mountain Ridge - Lucy Rigby is the powerhouse here – and she still has two more years to play! They could be a major contender going into region and state play.

No. 6 West Jordan took a tough loss this week at the hands of the Miners but then handily defeated Hillside. We will see what this week holds.

No. 7 Brighton - This is a really competent team, and has turned in some great games this year. However, they also haven’t had a lot of challenges. We will see what happens in playoffs.

No. 8 Provo - The Bulldogs are living up to their name with fierce spirit and grit. Their last two games have been substantial wins. We will see what happens as they face stiffer competition.

No. 9 Fremont - Another team that doesn’t just win, but shuts out their opponents. The trio of Kate Jensen, Bailey Sargent, and Brylee Jeppsen keep the ball moving – and going into the goal.

No. 10 Lone Peak has a mixed record this year, but still is showing strong. Their loss to Skyridge last week was rough, but they may get another chance going into region play.

Region Outlook

Region play for the girls teams is different this year, with only region 10 doing a true tournament. The rest have been decided in earlier play and regular scheduled games.

Region 1 - Region play is all but over here with key games happening this week. It’s too close to call, but Farmington does sit in the driver’s seat at 5-1 in region play. The matchup with the Phoenix and Syracuse this Tuesday could decide how things shake out.

Region 2 - Riverton almost has the region wrapped up here. They will play Herriman on Tuesday to seal the deal.

Region 3 - Skyridge finished the region on top. They now go into non-region play ahead of playoffs.

Region 4 - Park City. It wasn’t even close. In their final region game they didn’t even let the opposing West team on the board.

Region 5 - The final region game will be played between Box Elder and Northridge tonight. It won’t change the standings though and Fremont comes out on top.

Region 6 - Brighton and Olympus are sitting at 5-0 and will square off on Wednesday for the region title.

Region 7 - Payson and Salem Hills both have one loss. Salem Hills has the tie-breaker after beating Payson on Friday, 8-7. Still a few games left to see how this region shakes out.

Region 8 - Provo closed it out with a decisive victory over Mountain View last week. Well done, Bulldogs!

Region 9 - In the southern half of the state Hurricane closed out the year on top. They now head into their final game of the year in a non-region competition against Alta.

Region 10 - In the only region tournament of the year, this will come down to Judge Memorial and Highland on Friday. Their last meeting was not friendly, with the Bulldogs coming out on top and giving the Rams their only region loss, so we will see what happens this time.

Region 11 - Bear River has won this region, going undefeated!

Week 9 - Riverton v Park City

In a rare mid-season meeting of titans, 5A No. 1 Park City outlasted 6A No. 2 Riverton 9-7 at Westminster’s Dumke Field. The venue change proved wise, as a capacity crowd gathered to watch the state’s premier programs battle in a high-energy contest.

Park City’s Avery Blair opened the scoring early, but Riverton—entering the game undefeated—showed why they belong at the top. The Silverwolves surged ahead with a three-goal run from Suli Tafisi, Cara Erramouspe, and Paisley Young to take a 3-1 lead into the second quarter.

The Miners adjusted quickly in the second. Olivia Dalton and Coco Crawford found the net in rapid succession to tie the game. After a back-and-forth exchange featuring goals from Erramouspe and Blair, Riverton’s Tafisi scored again to briefly reclaim the lead. However, the Crawford-Dalton duo struck again before the half, giving Park City a narrow 6-5 advantage.

The second half transformed into a defensive masterpiece. Riverton’s Isabel Simonson (7 saves) and Park City’s McKinsey Darling (13 saves) stood tall, turning away a barrage of point-blank shots. The third quarter saw only two goals—one from Dalton and one from Riverton’s Marlie Young—leaving the Miners with a 7-6 edge entering the final frame.

Park City’s Natalia Szwajkun provided a crucial two-point cushion late in the fourth, but Riverton refused to fade. Tafisi completed her hat trick with a clutch goal to pull within one with three minutes remaining. As the Silverwolves pressured for the equalizer, Darling anchored the Miners’ defense with several timely saves. Finally, Coco Crawford sealed the victory with a powerful dodge and drive from the right side, securing the 9-7 win.

I was at the RMLC tournament on Friday and had great conversations with several lacrosse fans/coaches/etc. A topic that came up was former high schools that had teams. It’s interesting to me because it involves the history of our sport in the state. We talked about The Oakley School and how they had some really great teams and an All-American in James Seabrooke. There was of course Cottonwood, Murray, UMA, Summit Academy and a few teams that were pulled from a few different schools including the Spanish Fork Warriors!

Before the Bountiful v. Olympus game I was chatting with the Oly staff and they asked who the best goalie to play high school lacrosse in Utah was. I told them, “I’m old, so I’d go with ‘Chuckie’” a.k.a. Chris Powers. Powers played at Alta and BYU then NYIT where he led the Bears to an NCAA D-II championship. Other great goalies that came up were Dallas McLellan (Juan Diego/Westminster) and Sean Edwards (Juan Diego/Westminster). As I thought more about it, there is Kimber Hower who played at Brighton and North Carolina/Syracuse. My personal favorite goalie was Matt Crispo from Judge. I’d love to hear it from you, the reader… Who do you think the best goalies to play in Utah have been?

Mens

The college regular season has come to a close for all Utah teams and the playoff season has begun. There were multiple opportunities to get out to a game this weekend and I hope you did! Three games were settled by one goal including two that went to overtime.

MCLA
We’ll start in the MCLA this week as UVU hosted the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference playoffs at Zions Bank Stadium on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, in the MCLA D-II ranks, Utah State lost to Air Force Club, 17-8, and Montana State beat Denver Club, 17-11. Air Force Club then beat Montana State, 15-12, to earn an AQ spot to the MCLA D-II National Championship.

In the D-I ranks, on Friday, UVU took on Colorado and won, 10-5, while BYU faced Colorado State and won, 14-7. This set up the second matchup for the Wolverines and Cougars this season as the No. 1 and No. 2 team in the country. This time, the RMLC D-I Championship was at stake. The game was an instant classic for this rivalry. UVU earned a 3-0 lead early in the first and led 4-3 after the first quarter then it was tied at halftime, 5-5. UVU led by a goal after three quarters but BYU won the fourth quarter, 4-2, and ultimately the game by the score of 11-10.

Hutton Murphy was the one who notched the game-winning goal for the Cougars with 58 seconds left in regulation. The win was the Cougars 13th RMLC title. Both teams learned their MCLA National Tournament fate on Sunday night and BYU grabbed the No. 1 seed and will face No. 16 Michigan State. UVU is the No. 2 seed and will take on No. 15 Oregon.

In 2024, No. 1 BYU also played No. 16 Michigan State. BYU won that game 19-4. BYU went on to with the National Championship that year with wins over No. 8 San Diego State, No. 4 Liberty and of course, No. 14 UVU.

This will be the first matchup between UVU and Oregon. The teams were scheduled to play in 2020 but we know how that went. The Ducks came to Utah this year and played BYU, a 19-9 loss, and the Utah Club team, a 12-11 loss. UVU was the No. 2 seed last year and beat No. 15 Boise State, 18-7, No. 7 Northeastern, 14-5, then lost to No. 3 Georgia Tech, 17-14 in the semis.

The games will take place May 4 - 9 at the River City Sportsplex in Midlothian, Virginia.

NCAA
The Westminster Griffins hosted the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament this weekend and beat Northwest Nazarene on Friday, 20-10. Concordia University Irvine beat Colorado Mesa, 13-12, in overtime.

On Sunday, CUI took the RMAC Championship after beating the Griffins, 12-11, in overtime. Westminster finished the year 11-5.

Utah hosted Air Force in the regular-season finale for both teams and lost, 14-13, in overtime. Utah will head to Jacksonville as the No. 2 seed in the ASUN tournament and will take on Air Force once again who is the No. 3 seed. The game will begin at 4:00pm MT and will be available on ESPN+. The other semifinal will be No. 1 Jacksonville versus No. 4 Mercer at 1:00pm MT.

The crazy stat of the week is that Utah and Air Force have squared off nine times and seven of the games have been settled by one goal including two overtime games.

Womens

Westminster headed to Denver for the RMAC tournament and fell in the championship game to Regis, 14-5.

In the WCLA, Utah earned the No. 12 seed and will take on No. 5 Michigan at the WCLA National Tournament which begins on May 11 in Naples, Florida.

Boys’ Week 8 Coaches Poll

No. 1 Park City - The Miners came back from Spring Break and took on West Jordan on Wednesday, winning 14-1. The Miners then hosted No. 5 Farmington and won, 9-4. See the recap below for how the game shook out. Park City will face No. 6 Olympus on Tuesday then host No. 10 Judge Memorial on Friday. The Miners then take on No. 2 Corner Canyon on May 6 and Green Canyon on May 8.

No. 2 Corner Canyon - The Chargers took on two region opponents this week in American Fork and Lone Peak and had a combined score of 39-8. Pierson DeGracie had 10 goals and 3 assists over the two-game stretch. A region showdown with No. 8 Skyridge looms on Tuesday then a region game against Lehi on Friday. The Chargers take on No. 1 Park City on May 6 and East on May 8.

No. 3 Alta - The Hawks had three games this week and beat Davis, 16-9, Woods Cross, 16-7, and Viewmont, 16-5. Beckham Horoba had 10 goals and 15 assists over the three-game span. Alta will host Skyline on Wednesday then take on No. 6 Olympus on Friday. The Hawks will finish the regular season on May 6 against No. 7 Bountiful.

No. 4 Brighton - Brighton also played three games this week, beating Mountain Ridge, 15-12, Skyline 17-6 and No. 7 Bountiful, 13-4. Zac Anderson had 6 goals and 2 assists for the Bengals against Mountain Ridge. Brighton will take on No. 9 Juan Diego on Tuesday and Viewmont on Friday. The Bengals finish the season on May 6 against No. 6 Olympus.

No. 5 Farmington - The Phoenix beat Layton, 23-0, then lost to No. 1 Park City, 9-4. See the recap below. Farmington will face Weber on Tuesday in a key region game. Thursday will see rival Davis come down the road. Farmington will finish the season with Syracuse, Layton and No. 10 Judge Memorial.

No. 6 Olympus - The Titans lost to No. 7 Bountiful, 7-6, in its lone game this week. Jacob Buxton and James Cannon both had a goal and an assist to lead the Titans. Olympus will finish the season with four home games: No. 1 Park City on Tuesday, Viewmont, No. 3 Alta and No. 4 Brighton.

No. 7 Bountiful - The Redhawks beat No. 6 Olympus, 7-6, on Wednesday then lost to No. 4 Brighton on Friday, 13-4. Carter Terry had 2 goals and 1 assist for the Redhawks against the Bengals. Bountiful will take on Woods Cross on Wednesday, Skyline on Friday and No. 3 Alta on May 6.

No. 8 Skyridge - The Falcons beat Lehi, 19-5. Carson Butterfield had 5 goals and 1 assist with Dylan Forsgren notching 4 goals and 1 assist for Skyridge against the Pioneers. Skyridge hosts No. 2 Corner Canyon on Tuesday and will head to Lone Peak on Friday. The final game for Skyridge in the regular season will be on May 8 against Hillcrest.

No. 9 Juan Diego - The Soaring Eagle were tested on Wednesday by Waterford but ultimately won in overtime, 11-10. Chris Jimerson had the game-winning goal in overtime and had another goal and assist on the night. Cooper Pecora went 19 of 21 from the faceoff dot. Juan Diego will take on No. 4 Brighton on Tuesday and Snow Canyon on Friday. The Soaring Eagle will then take part in the Region 10 playoffs on May 6 and May 8.

No. 10 Judge Memorial - The Bulldogs beat East, 17-7, and Hillcrest, 19-2, in two region contests this week. Dylan Hersh had 1 goal and 5 assists against East. Rome Swanwick added 4 goals and 2 assists. Judge will take on West Jordan on Wednesday and No. 1 Park City on Friday. The Bulldogs finish out the season on May 6 against Lone Peak and No. 5 Farmington on May 8.

Region Outlook

This is how we see the regions shaking out. Obviously anything can happen and nothing is set in stone until all games are played!

Region 1 - Farmington is in the driver’s seat but the game on Tuesday against Weber will be important. If Weber wins, it would share the region title with the Phoenix.

Region 2 - Bingham and Mountain Ridge remain undefeated in region play. Their game on Tuesday will likely determine the region champ.

Region 3 - Corner Canyon heads to Skyridge on Tuesday in a game that will decide who takes home the region title.

Region 4 - Park City and Judge play on Friday in a game that will likely determine who wins the title.

Region 5 - West Field leads the region, but Box Elder is on the doorstep. They play on Wednesday. West Field won the first matchup, 17-6.

Region 6 - Alta is 3-0 in region while Brighton, Bountiful and Olympus have 1 loss in region play. There is potential for any of these teams to take the crown. We’ll know more after this week.

Region 7 - Wasatch and Timpview are both 4-0 in region. They play on Friday. However, Pleasant Grove is 3-1 and also will play Wasatch this week and Timpview next week.

Region 8 - Timpanogos is 4-0 and will face Provo and Orem again. The T-Wolves beat Orem, 17-4 and Provo, 11-4 already so winning the region is within reach.

Region 9 - Snow Canyon (5-0 in region) is in control after beating Dixie on April 15. The Warriors will host Hurricane on Tuesday who is 4-1.

Region 10 - Juan Diego is 3-0 but the winner of this region will be determined in the Region 10 playoffs in the last week of the season.

Region 11 - Bear River leads at 4-1. The Bears face Green Canyon (3-1), Sky View (1-3) and Mountain Crest (1-3) to finish the season.

Boys Spotlight Game of the Week by Hill and Hill Photography

Week 8 – Farmington vs Park City

Though chasing different classification trophies, 5A Park City and 6A Farmington had this “statement game” circled on their calendars for weeks. Both Top 5 programs boast high-powered offenses and physical defenses, making them legitimate state championship contenders.

From the opening face-off, the pace was relentless. Park City capitalized on the electric atmosphere early, as Parker Jones and Matix Black secured a 2-0 lead that held through the end of the first quarter.

Farmington refused to let the game slip away. Behind key defensive adjustments and point-blank saves from goalie Brandon Barrus, the Phoenix stayed within reach. Ryder Hill opened the second quarter with a goal just 40 seconds in, cutting the lead to 2-1. While Park City’s Crew Kimble and Thomas Fannon extended the Miners’ lead, Farmington’s Brock Milne and Wyatt Salmon answered late to bring the score to 4-3 at the half.

The third quarter was a defensive masterclass. Long-pole pressure and stellar play from Barrus and Park City’s Max Gordon kept the scoreboard nearly frozen. It wasn’t until the 3:24 mark that Farmington’s Cole Smith finally tied the game at 4-4.

The fourth quarter belonged entirely to Park City. Their defense hounded the Phoenix while the offense finally found the gaps. With Fannon netting two more goals alongside scores from Jones, Jesse Dittmer, and Wade Birch, the Miners surged ahead. A five-goal final frame sealed a hard-fought 9-4 victory.

The road stays tough for the Miners as they face Olympus and Judge this week. Farmington will look to bounce back in region play against Weber and Davis.

Girls’ Week 8 Coaches Poll

No. 1 Park City will face off with No. 2 Riverton this week. While Riverton has an unbroken winning record, all of the Miner’s losses have happened out of state. Senior standout Lily Yatkeman anchors a formidable defense that has held nearly every opponent to single digits, will she keep Riverton at bay?

No. 2 Riverton could have its winning streak broken this week when they face off against No. 1 Park City. But the Silverwolves aren’t going to let it happen without a fight.

No. 3 Skyridge picked up a big win over Farmington this past week, and they could go on a four-win run in their coming games prior to the playoffs.

No. 4 Bear River could very well be on its way to another region championship. The next two weeks look like they could take some time to hone their skills and really aim to take it all.

No. 5 Mountain Ridge is a strong team, but when they come up against tough opponents they falter. Let’s see how they finish out the season.

No. 6 West Jordan have established themselves as a premier powerhouse in their division. Senior star Lily Henderson anchors the high-octane offense, leading the charge with a staggering 90 points this season.

No. 7 Brighton boasts a high-powered offense that has proven difficult for even the toughest defenses to contain. Senior standout Sophie Nielsen continues to dominate the field, leading the team’s scoring efforts as Brighton remains a dangerous threat in the 5A landscape.

No. 8 Fremont is having an amazing season and could finish the season with a 15-2 record. Will this put them in a position to take their division?

No. 9 Lone Peak’s offensive juggernaut is powered by seniors Norah Lisonbee and Lucy McMurray, who combined for 12 goals in their recent dominant win over Corner Canyon.

No. 10 Provo hasn’t gotten a lot of attention this year, but don’t sleep on them. The Bulldogs have a stellar 13-1 record, currently dominating Division 4A as the #2 ranked team in the classification. Sophomore midfielder Lily Andelin is a key part of a deep roster that features a stifling defense and a high-powered offense averaging over 15 goals per game.

Region Outlook

Region 1 - This is one of the tightest region races in any gender or classification this year. Farmington is 3-1 and Davis, Weber and Syracuse are 3-2. There are still too many games left to declare a clear winner.

Region 2 - Riverton looks to be the front-runner after a 10-7 over Mountain Ridge on Friday. Herriman could have a say though!

Region 3 - Skyridge sits in the top spot at 6-0 and should stay there with 2 region games left.

Region 4 - There haven’t been any region games played, so this one should come down to the winner of Park City/West Jordan on Tuesday.

Region 5 - Fremont is the team to beat, sitting at 9-0 in region play.

Region 6 - Brighton leads the way at 4-0. Olympus is 3-0 in region and will play Brighton on May 6.

Region 7 - Payson is 4-0 in region and will take on the challenger Salem Hills on 5/1.

Region 8 - Provo is comfortably in the lead and should win the region.

Region 9 - Hurricane is at 5-0 and are likely to win the region.

Region 10 - Judge sits at the top but the Region playoffs will determine who wins this region.

Region 11 - Bear River is 6-0 in region play and will win the region.

Girls Spotlight Game of the Week by Hill and Hill Photography

Week 8 - Corner Canyon vs Lone Peak

With the state playoffs approaching, Lone Peak solidified its region standing with a commanding 19-8 victory over Corner Canyon. The Knights’ dominance was established at the draw circle, where Lucy McMurray controlled possession throughout the contest.

The game opened with an immediate offensive burst. Nora Lisonbee scored off a McMurray draw control, and McMurray followed with a solo effort to put the Knights up 2-0 within minutes. Although Corner Canyon’s Madilyn Story briefly halted the momentum, Lone Peak closed the first quarter with a 4-1 lead. The Knights extended their advantage in the second, scoring in bunches. Lisonbee secured an early hat trick, while McMurray and Summer Galbraith helped build a 9-2 halftime cushion.

The Chargers responded with urgency in the third quarter. Alice Linford, Taylor Jones, and Avery Berger spearheaded a comeback attempt that cut the lead to 12-7. However, timely goals from Lisonbee and Emmy Anderson kept the Knights from losing their grip on the game.

Lone Peak shut the door in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Chargers 7-1. McMurray and Lisonbee both finished the day with six goals apiece, while Natalie Smith and Galbraith added to the final tally.

The Knights now look ahead to a massive matchup against region-leading Skyridge next Friday after facing American Fork. Corner Canyon also faces a difficult stretch, hosting both Skyridge and Lehi next week.

The Wasatch Whalers are in Prague for the Aleš Hřebeský Memorial tournament. The Whalers went 2-3 at the event. The outdoor venue looked incredible! Merritt McMahon had 5 goals and 2 assists on the week. Casey Rich had 4 goals and 3 assists. Goalies Gavin Beilman and Josh McDougall had 49 combined saves.

April 14 - Herriman @ East (Boy’s)
East came out and blew the doors off, winning 22-8. The Leopards led 14-4 at halftime.

April 15 - Alta @ Brighton (Boy’s)
This game between Top 5 opponents ended up living up to the billing as Alta won, 14-13.

April 15 - Mountain Crest @ Bear River (Boy’s)
Bear River continued to show why its the favorite in Region 11 with a 12-4 win over the Mustangs.

April 16 - Weber @ Davis (Girl’s)
It came down to the wire but the Darts pulled out the win, 8-7.

CE: I like what Lehi is building, and they beat American Fork last year, which was huge for them. However, I think the Cavemen are better equipped this year, especially with Sawyer Jensen’s dominance on face-offs this season.

TH: What a matchup! I’m going to give the slight edge to the home team. Lehi wins it.

RH: Great matchup with both teams very motivated for the win, I’m going with AF and the power of the faceoff and possession.

LM: This may be the tightest match of the week. But I think Lehi will walk away with in OT.

DS: American Fork

AW: I think Lehi will take this one, 12-8.

CE: In week 1, I was one of the few staff members who didn’t give a shout-out to Payson goalie Myka Elliot. Since then, her and the Lions defense have been locking down some of the best attacks in the state. Payson wins this one.

TH: I’m going to pick the Wasps. Once again the home team will prove to be victorious.

RH: Payson is always strong, a little quit this year, but still strong. The Lions take this one.

LM: Payson is an amazing team, and I am glad that people are paying attention to Myka. It will be close, but I think they win.

LM: This should be a pretty easy win for Green Canyon. Shout out to Logan, though, for stepping up with their offense this season. They have closed the gap on scoring in games this year.

RH: Snow Canyon in this one, pretty even, but I will go with SC’s defense in a low scoring game.

LM: This is a tricky one. Both schools are relatively new to play, and still figuring things out. I’m going with Desert Hills.
