REGION OUTLOOK
Here are my super non-scientific estimates of how the regions will shake out.
Region 1: Farmington is 10-0 on the season followed by Fremont 7-2. We’ve seen this match up once before with only a 1 goal differential. I think we’ll see them again for the Region 1 title!
Region 3: Mountain Ridge leads the regional pack with a 3-0 record this far. Herriman has trailed behind Mountain Ridge. Their first match up Mountain Ridge took the lead with a 16MR – 3H win, second round up Herriman learned and excelled with only taking the L by one goal 7MR – 6H. I foresee them meeting up again for the Region 3 title.
Region 4: Lone Peak takes the lead in region 4 with a 7-0 record. Corner Canyon following Lone Peaks lead with a 6-1 record. These two had a competitive game and I bet we’ll see their passion on the field once more for the Region 4 title!
Region 5: Woods Cross trumps ahead Bountiful for region 5. Woods Cross sits at 5-0 and Bountiful is 5-1. I predict we’ll see these two make up once more for the Region 5 title.
Region 6: We have a three-way tie at the moment with Olympus, Park City and Skyline. As the season has projected this far. I take the guess that we’ll see Olympus and Park City battle it out for the Region 6 Title.
Region 8: Lehi takes the first spot with 8-0 in region 8 with Alta in second with 7-1. With these two taking such a lead in region 8 they’re bound to see one another on the field for the Region 8 title.
Region 9: Provo and Payson are battling it out for the top spot in region 9. Provo record is 3-0 and Payson is 4-1. The region is a fair playing field but these two are in the line up to take the title for Region 9.
South: A three-way tie has never been more defined than Waterford, Judge and Juan Diego all at 1-1. If comes down to the full schedule with Waterford have a 4-4 record this season.
North: Bear River sky high with first place for the North. Bear River will most likely go against Mountain Crest. If history repeats itself, Bear River will end on top once more.
COLLEGE RECAPS
By: Weslie Lundell
Due to BYU, the U of U, and Utah Valley all being in preparation for Regionals this week, it was pretty quiet in the Women’s lacrosse world here in Utah. Westminster was the lone game provider as they hosted Colorado Mesa University on the Dumke Field.
WESTMINSTER
The Griffins hosted the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks on Saturday (4/29). The Mavericks were the first to hit the net just 30 seconds into the first quarter. Next, Shaina Shoughro scored for the Griffins at the 9:17 min. mark but it wouldn’t be until 8:00 min. left in the second quarter when Lauren Shoughro would put up the next two goals. With the Mavericks controlling the score at the half with a 14-3 lead, Westminster looked to make some solid ground during the remaining 30 minutes. They weren’t able to cut the deficit, however, and the game ended at 7-18.
Lauren Shoughro led the team with 4 goals, 4 GB, a CT and a DC. Hannah Kelleher had 2 goals and Shaina Shoughro finished the game with a goal, a GB and 3 DC. Hunter Doyle had 6 DC herself. Goalie Gabi Cheminant finished the game with 50% shots saved.
Weekly Game Recaps
Corner Canyon has two games this past week. Starting with Lone Peak, 7-18. Coach Kenning nominats Cat Faucette as their MVP. “Cat had a great game, shot the ball well and remained consistent the entire game.” Final thoughts “We came out flat and with low energy. We won a lot of games in a row going into the matchup and just assumed we would play well. We learned that wins are not handed to us, that we have to work hard, come in focused and with energy in order to beat the better teams on our schedule” Second game was against Skyridge, 15-4. Corner Canyon nominates Niya West as their MVP this game. “Niya is one of our starting low defenders, she is having an awesome season and this was one of her better games, led a great defensive effort” Final thoughts on the game '“We bounced back well from the LP loss, we played clean, made few mistakes and took smarter shots. We really took care of the ball and forced a lot of turnovers on defense.”
Northridge traveled to Woods Cross where they took home the L, 3-20. Despite the lose Coach Larsen nominates Ashlee Read as the MVP of this game. “As a freshman and new goalie, she showed up and PLAYED! It was awesome to watch.” Final thoughts “After allowing 16 points in the first half, a found our defense and held the wildcats to only 4 goals in the entire service half. We're learning and growing every game.”
Park City hosted their Senior night against Riverton, where they gather the win, 23-2. Park City Head Coach Clayton nominates her Seniors as the MVPs. “Seniors - Phebe Marsland, Ava Kimche, Lilly Hunt; it was senior night and such a special night to honor our 3 seniors and their dedication to lacrosse and their teammates over the past four years. Couldn’t ask for a better group of girls to lead our team this year.”
Pleasant Grove hosting Westlake where they dominated with game with a 16-5 win. PG nominates Lydia Gabbard as their MVP of this game. Coach Wright “Lydia, pushed herself to create space on attack and had 2 great goals!” Final thoughts of their game against Westlake “Our team worked really on creating space for each other on attack. In the transitions and on offense our girls were always keeping their heads up to look for those extra passes and openings.” PG went up against Lone Peak and got beat by a handful of goals, 7-11. PG nominates Madilyn Floyd as their MVP of this game. Coach Wright “Madi is our goalie! She had an amazing game with 13 saves which resulted in a 54% save rate.” Final thoughts on their game “Our girls really brought their intensity to this game! The defense did an amazing job holding off shots and our goalie had so many fantastic saves! It was very evenly matched the first half as it ended 4-4. After the half our girls worked extremely hard to recover from some quick shots from Lone Peak. Our attack focused on being patient with their shots and our defense focused on communicating more. They gave it their all on the field and for that, we are extremely proud!”
ALL Utah Coaches be sure to nominate your 2 Seniors for this years Senior games at Jordan High School May 27th. See your emails for those extra details.
