Mason Goodhand Retires at Westminster

This newsletter aims to service every type of lacrosse fan so I’m going to give a little bit of a history lesson when it comes to Mason Goodhand. ‘Mase’ is considered one of the founding fathers of lacrosse in Utah and has been a staple on the sidelines since the beginning. From the Eagle Lacrosse Club, which led to a program at Juan Diego, to coaching at the University of Utah to starting a program at Westminster, Goodhand has had some role, usually many, each season since at least 1994. Goodhand has also served in basically every position in every association dealing with lacrosse at some point.

From the press release from the school:

"The time at Westminster went very fast and I am appreciative of the young men, families, coaches and staff that made the 14 years go by so fast," Coach Goodhand said. "We are poised to bring recognition to the West, and I am very confident that in the next few years appearances at the national tournament will be part of our seasons."

I couldn’t agree more, the last 14 years have gone fast! I couldn’t believe it had actually been that long since Goodhand began the program. From MCLA D-II semi-finalists in 2007, MCLA D-II champions in 2008, MCLA D-I tournament participants, to the NCAA D-II level, Goodhand has been at the helm the whole time. Joe Kerwin will take over for Goodhand.

2020 US Lacrosse Bob Scott Award

Congrats to Zach Meyer (M/Corner Canyon) and Jacob ‘Jakey’ Green (A/Spanish Fork) for being awarded the Bob Scott award.

2020 Utah Blake Strebel Award

The Blake Strebel Memorial Award is given by the Utah High School Boys Head Coaches to a deserving senior who has demonstrated academic excellence in the classroom, leadership abilities, school and community involvement over and above the lacrosse field and overall superior personal characteristics. Easton Wilkey, part of the long line of Timpanogos ‘Wilkey’ goalies, was this years winner.

The Deseret News published a high level article about all 777 (previously 747) high school scholarship recipients. It includes a graph that states lacrosse had 314 participants on the boys side and 207 on the girls side. These are UHSAA numbers (no IMLAX teams).
