LAX IQ, Coaches Poll, New Coach Spotlight: Madisen Rober, Men's College and Women's College
By: Megan Chembers, Dane Stewart and McKenzie Christiansen
Welcome to this weeks Utah Lacrosse Report. I want to express my gratitude to all the contributors who make ULR possible. We wouldn't be here today without the support of Tribal West Lacrosse, MinersTown Strength and Conditioning, the coaching staff of all Utah high school and college lacrosse teams, and all of you. We are committed to learning and growing with every article. I (McKenzie) appreciate all the feedback I have received to improve our content. I started here at URL back in 2022 with Tim Haslam as the OG leader. Tim approached me asking if I knew anyone in the lacrosse community willing help him write here at the Utah Lacrosse Report, I didn’t. After sometime, I reached back out to Tim and I offered my help. I’m no writer or journalist, I am just a lover of lacrosse. I make my fair share of mistakes but I learn from each one of them. I don't do this alone; Megan Chambers has joined us this season and has been a great help covering high school girls' content while I learn about the boys' game. Dane Stewart is a hero of mine; he has graciously offered to assist with men's lacrosse content. Our media coverage is provided by the one and only Patrick Sanger, along with Hill and Hill Photography. Last season, I brought back the Senior All-Star Games in 2023, and we'll be hosting them again this year on May 25th.

Elevating Your Lacrosse Performance Beyond the Field: LAX IQ
The significance of Lacrosse IQ (LAX IQ), alongside physical skills, for success on the field highlights the importance of understanding the mental aspects of the game, illustrating its impact on performance.
LAX IQ encompasses a deep understanding of the game, including identifying strengths and weaknesses within its elements. It relies on knowledge of rules, strategies, and personnel, enabling players to recognize and capitalize on opportunities created by discrepancies in play. With three key components—strategy understanding, situational observation and assessment, and experience—LAX IQ distinguishes between good and great players, emphasizing the importance of knowing when and how to utilize their skills effectively.
Enhancing LAX IQ involves several strategies aimed at developing a deeper understanding of the game and improving on-field decision-making. Players can start by studying game footage, both from their own matches and from higher levels of play, to identify areas for improvement. Effective communication and teamwork are also crucial components of a high LAX IQ, as players must understand their roles within the team and support overall strategies. Mental rehearsal and visualization techniques help players anticipate game scenarios and make quicker decisions during gameplay. Practicing drills that simulate real-game situations further enhances decision-making abilities. Adaptability is key in lacrosse, as players must be able to adjust their strategies on the fly to counter opponents effectively. Seek guidance from coaches and mentors, who offer valuable insights and advice based on their experience, can significantly contribute to improving lacrosse IQ. Physical fitness plays a crucial role as well, because a well-conditioned body enables clearer thinking and faster decision-making on the field. Staying updated with the latest trends and techniques in lacrosse ensures players maintain a competitive edge.
Improving LAX IQ is essential as the sport demands both physical agility and sharp mental acuity. While some players rely solely on athleticism or skill to win, mastering LAX IQ involves understanding gameplay strategies and styles. Elevating your LAX IQ benefits all teammates, enabling better anticipation of play developments and more strategic positioning. Ultimately, LAX IQ is a pivotal aspect of the game, encompassing strategic understanding, anticipation of opponents' moves, and effective decision-making on the field.

The first half was a nailbiter (first half score PC-6, MR-6), as the weather was clearly an obstacle for both teams - cold, rainy, sleet, then snow - where both teams had to play in tough conditions, but the Miners rose above the adverse weather. With an 83% team shot percentage, 18 GBs and 8 CT’s, Coach Clayton detailed it best as it “was a slow start both offensively and defensively, but the team finally started to play together and came away with the win. Mountain Ridge is always a tough, athletic opponent!”

No. 6 Davis – Finding themselves both a win and a loss this week, the Davis Darts move up two positions in the Coaches’ Poll. Their first game of the week was away versus Bingham, with the final buzzer landing the score a loss for the Darts (6-11). Problem solving some team roster shuffling, Coach Makenzie Hekking explains how “it definitely impacted us this game”. The team was missing three varsity starters and had some newcomers who received significant varsity playing time as a result. The Darts encountered challenges in getting shots on cage, either going wide or hitting the pipe. It wasn't until the fourth quarter they started to find their groove, but by then, it was too late to make a difference in the game.
Having a couple days where the players could get their newer players more varsity reps in practice, Davis defeated non-region Brighton (12-8) while on the road this past Friday. Coach Makenzie reveals how the “girls came out with a better attitude and stayed positive the entire game”. MVP against Brighton was named Mackenzie Coleman, racking up her individual stats with 3 goals, 5 draw controls, 11 ground balls and winning 6 of her 9 draws.
Up next, the Darts will be addressing their lapses in defense from last week against Ridgeline on Tuesday (3/19) at home.
No. 7 Fremont – On the rise, Fremont sends it two positions in the ULR Coaches Poll this week. They had a big win against Copper Hills, scoring 16 goals to Copper Hills’ 1. At the half, Fremont had a shutout (10-0), only allowing one goal in the second half. Many players did well in this game, including goals by Button (2 goals), Jeffries (4), Williams, Jenkins, Higley (5), M. Sargent (2) and B. Sargent shot their team shot percentage up to 76%. Success from the 75% draw control by senior Raina Button and the 13 CTs showcased their teamwork and determination in the midfield. After such a successful win early in the week, the Silverwolves faced a loss after playing Mountain Ridge under home lights on Friday (3/15), final score of 6-11. Expanding their shot threats, goals were sinked by Williams, Jenkins, Higley (2) and M. Sargent (2) while assists were skillfully placed by Button, Jeffries and Parkinson.
The Silverwolves are set to play Box Elder today (3/18) for a non-region match-up at 5:30pm.

Senior Ayla Cole (#22) saw the MVP title after her skills helped lead Brighton to a nail-biting game. The Bengals saw another defeat two days later on 3/15 against the Davis Darts (8-12). With 13 team ground balls claimed, Isabelle Gurley led her team with 4 ground ball pickups while goaltender A. Keefer came in with seven saves. The Bengals 8 goals were skillfully placed by Isabelle Gurley (3), Caroline Lee (3), Ava Dolato, and Charly Eichner.

Wilkinson with 2), and 20 draw controls setting their team draw control to 77% (M. Mickelsen, B. Richard, S. Wilkinson). Not only did they score a win against Bonneville, but started their weekend off defeating Syracuse in a home game on Friday (3/15), final score 12-8. Goalie Tristan Smart was named MVP against the Lakers with 8 huge saves, imperative to Bear River’s success under Friday night lights. Coach Jeremy Webb exclaims how “they are starting to find their identity!” in response to their success this past week.

No. 10 Farmington – Slipping 3 positions in the ULR Coaches’ Poll this week, the Farmington Phoenix played their second game of the season this past week at home on Thursday (3/14) against non-conference Bingham miners. The Phoenix faced a loss after Bingham scored 11 on Farmington’s 9 goals. Head coach, Chris MacAulay, named Alexandra MacAulay MVP of the game against the Phoenix due to her 6 goals, 14 high quality generated shots (assists and play maker) and 5 ground balls making her the offensive engine the team needed. When asked his overall thoughts for this season, Coach MacAulay recounts how they’re “starting out slower this year, deliberately, to expose [their] strengths and weaknesses in order to take a building block approach to get where [they] want to be at the end of the season.”
Farmington will continue to hone their strengths and address their weaknesses against Wasatch today (3/18) for a 7pm home game and again on Wednesday (3/20) when they go against Ridgeline.

Utah Utes
Coming off back to back wins, and a bye week, there was all sorts of reason for Utah to head to Bellarmine for their ASUN conference opener with confidence. Not only had Utah looked like they had figured things out, but they had also never lost to Bellarmine in this series.
Utah came out and notched the first goal of the game on a shot by Colby Plotts. Bellarmine however showed they had the confidence to go up against the two-time defending conference champs. The Knights went on a 4-0 run to close out the opening quarter, including two goals within 20 seconds to take a 4-1 lead after the first. The Knights continued their offense prowess in the second quarter as they expanded that lead to 9-2 over the Utes. Stines and a man-up goal for DiMarzo gave a couple goals to pull Utah to 9-4 at the break. Utah was outshot in each quarter in the first half.
The second half saw Utah find more shooting opportunities, but pre-season All-ASUN Bellarmine Goalie JC Higginbotham stood tall and proved to be a tough test for the Utah shooters. Utah outshot Bellarmine 13-7 in the third quarter, but were only able to chip into that deficit by 1, and trailed 12-8 through three.
In danger of dropping their conference opener, the Ute’s offense continued to put significant pressure on the Knights. Utah was dominant thru the majority of the fourth quarter, and it showed as Ryan Stines came out blazing, scoring three goals in the fourth quarter, Cody Hart also had one as Utah came back to tie it up 12-12 with 6:19 to go. A Knight broken stick gave Utah an extra man and Carson Moyer found the back of the net to give Utah the lead for the first time since the opening minutes with just than 4 minutes to play. The lead wouldn’t last for long as Bellarmine had a nice goal right in front of the cage to tie it back up. A faceoff infraction gave Bellarmine the possession inside 1:45 left, but Utah was able to generate a turnover where regulation would now come down to the final possession with Utah.
After draining most of the remaining time, Zachary White started from the corner and took a shot that went wide with 10 seconds left; a Utah backup allowed the Utes another chance. A direct pass to Ryan Stines to start play, and Stines found a lane for a dodge down the right side when he rifled one right past the ear of Higginbotham and under the crossbar to put Utah up 14-13 with 2.8 seconds left and give Utah the come from behind win.
It was a gritty effort for both teams, with most statistical categories showing the competitiveness between these two teams. Stines finished with 5 goals and McMahon had 4 assists as Utah returned back to .500 at 3-3, and now 1-0 in conference play.
Utah returns home for two games this week, Wednesday they’ll host Air Force (the only other team to receive a pre-season first place vote) at 12pm before hosting Detroit Mercy Saturday night at 6pm. Both games will be at Ute Field.

In the fourth, it was Blake Yates scoring his second goal of the game to put UVU up 6-5. #22 Utah State had a chance on the road to take on #14 UC San Diego, but the Tritons were not in a friendly-type mood regarding their visitors. Brady Kurtz scored a pair of goals to lead the way for Utah State, but the Titan defense held the Aggies’ top scorers, Ben Booth and Bryson Fell, to 1 goal each. Triton goalie Jarett Smith was dominant, saving an incredible 76% of the Aggies’ shots. While Boston Preisler’s effort between the pipes for the Aggies was admirable, he posted a solid .536 save percentage for the Aggies, he couldn’t match the stellar performance in the other cage. With the loss, the Aggies fell to 4-3 on the season.
