Hill and Hill Photography and Recap
In a mid-season matchup that felt like a playoff showdown, two of Utah’s top high school lacrosse programs clashed on Firestone Field at Brighton High School this past Tuesday. The atmosphere was electric, with the PA announcer dubbing it "Welcome to the Jungle," and indeed, it lived up to the hype. From the very first face-off to the final whistle, both teams left everything they had out on the field.
Brighton set off the fireworks early, with Gabe Carrera finding the back of the net for the only score of the first quarter. Goalies Mason Fray of Brighton and Olympus' Caleb Johnson made it clear that goals would be hard to come by, with the first quarter ending in a tight 1-0 advantage for the Bengals.
The second quarter saw more action, with both teams getting shots on goal but only three managing to slip past the goalies. Jarom Gilbert of Olympus tied the score early in the quarter, but Carrera and teammate James Anderson quickly responded to give Brighton a 3-1 lead going into halftime.
As the second half kicked off under cooler, darker conditions, the scoring heated up. Six goals were scored in total, with both teams trading blows. Cole Cummings led the charge for Olympus, netting two of his four goals of the evening. However, Brighton's Andrew Salinas and Austin Taylor kept the momentum on their side with crucial scores, and the Bengals maintained a 6-4 lead heading into the final quarter.
Cummings continued to shine for Olympus, adding two more goals to keep the game within reach. But it was Carrera of Brighton who delivered the final blow, securing the hard-fought 7-6 victory for the Bengals. It was a defensive battle from start to finish, with both teams putting up a formidable fight. In the end, Brighton's ability to capitalize on opportunities proved to be the difference-maker, securing them a hard-earned one-point victory.
With such a closely contested matchup, it's clear that these cross-town rivals have a lot more in store for each other this season. As the competition heats up and the stakes get higher, fans can expect more thrilling encounters between these two powerhouse teams.
