A busy week for the Utes that saw them make a mid-week cross-country trek to take on the #6 Syracuse Orange (3-1) before returning home to host the Vermont Catamounts.
Syracuse came into the game after a hard fought overtime loss against Maryland, and figured to be feisty against the 0-2 Utes, but it was Utah coming out strong. Some early saves by Lenskold and an early Utah goal saw Utah take the early lead. But as the first quarter went on, the Orange would take a hold of the game, leading 7-3 after the first quarter. While Lenskold made some nice saves as the game went on, the precision of Syracuse was too much, even flexing a hidden-ball trick to beat Lenskold in the second quarter. The Syracuse defense, while allowing shots to Utah, was led by their goalie Will Mark, who is the active saves leader in the NCAA. Mark helped shut out the Utah offense in the second and third quarters helping the Orange lead 13-3 through the third. The fourth quarter saw Utah finally start to find the back of the net, but Syracuse was able to keep pace as the Orange cruise to a 18-7 win over the Utes.
On Saturday Utah returned home to Rice-Eccles Stadium to host the Vermont Catamounts. Utah got off to a blazing start, leading 8-1 in the first quarter. Vermont showed some fight in the second quarter, but it wouldn’t be enough to overcome as Utah would cruise, outscoring Vermont in the third and fourth quarters en route to a 22-12 win. It was Utah’s first win of the season, but one that saw leaders from last year’s team get back on track. Jordan Hyde and Ryan Stones combined for 10 goals for Utah while Lenskold made 16 saves in the win. Utah combined for 53 shots, 38 on goal, peppering the Vermont defense early and often. It was an all around impressive effort coming off the loss earlier in the week to Syracuse.
Utah will take to the road again next week as they head out to take on Marquette. Last year Utah hosted and defeated the Golden Eagles 18-16
